Would a Katana cut you in one blow - head to groin?

Yup, that's my thought exactly :D

Come to think of it .... how on earth did the conversation get round to cutting a guy in half  :D
We were discussing people being attacked by them, then Cykey asked if you could chop someone in half.

it is almost possible, i've seen a dog's head taken down in one single blow from a matchet (what we call cutlass)

That was my fault :) There was another Samurai based incident around here, somewhere in Cheshire. We got to talking about them and it naturally led to slicing people in 2 :)

Are Samurai swords *that* sharp that they could do it in one go?

It would depend a lot on technique. I'm not sure it's possible but if it is you have to ask yourself, have you created two seperate humans or simply cut a single human into two halves ;)

Even ninja wrists couldn't resist buckling as the katana sticks somewhere in the base of the skull. Eww, how nasty does that sound.

Tee-hee, Samurai butchers.

I think left to right or right to left would be pushing it a bit too.

So we're having this debate on IRC (#overclockers-uk on quakenet) and DRZ says its not possible to cut a guy in half in one sweep with a mint condition Katana and the others say it is. So, is it? Are Samurai swords *that* sharp that they could do it in one go?

i would say yes they are precision made weapons with one purpose only to dismember someones limbs

The B.H.A (British Human Association) states it is clearly still one person, just cut in half, now leave it at that.

No they arent...Theyre primarily slashing weapons...Slashing strikes to the body...

The point of swords is to kill someone...Cutting off arms and stuff is movie stuff or chance occurance.

From what i have read in books, the swords made for Samurai were tested thoroughly by the blacksmith making them.

They would either test them on corpses from recent battles, or, more likely then not, straw dummies soaked in water.

They did a variety of testing "cuts" involving such ones as arms, legs, decapitation, and the final one being a slice from shoulder to oppposite waist/midriff.

The tang of the sword would be inscirbed with the tests it completed.

Katana's (for the majority, but also the Wakazachi (sp) and Tanto) were razor sharp, and are designed in such a way they work in a slicing motion.

Also, from looking in my book, Flashing Steel (a book all about Eishin-Ryu Swordsmanship) if you failed to kill your opponent in the proposed single move, you could counter-attack/defend by slicing off a hand or even whole arm.

Answer... Not unless your name is Buffy Summers.

Although that was groin to head, not t'other way around, and the 'had to split' joke was used there too.

A five year old boy, yes. A fully grown man, no.

Kenny Baker, yes.

whats the difference? density of the body? With enough force, good blade (heck all katanas were a masterpiece) and the right slicing angle, a full grown man would be sweft in twain
