so guys i duno where to look or wot to do now but im really fussy about gaming on my pc.100fps on windows xp with a proper defrag is amazing and i know the feel of it but recently i have been using 60fps with vsync and been pleased about smoothness.

now recently or i think it is recent as its been a long time and my memory sucks but i have been having horrible tearing or stutter when i move around in some games.

l4d is the big problem when i turn or move holding A or D and move the mouse u can see zoey and bill stutter while standing still, almost as if v sync was not on.the thing is im using vsync at have around 40-60 fps mostly around 55 which im starting to think is the problem?

tf2 is butter smooth compared to l4d and so is call of duty world at war although if i strafe around say a vehicle holding A and moving my mouse i can still detect slight abnormalies on the truck.almost like a very slight judder?

i have tried all settings and windows xp sp2 and vista sp3 + 4 formats and nothing has worked.latest drivers too and wot i consider a well kept system.xp is far smoother than vista in l4d but the problem still is visable.

im starting to suspect wot seems like a perfectly working razer habu mouse.

nope it was doing this on my old 8800 gtx which died as well.

tried 2 gfx card 5 formats diff operating systems and can find nothing!

tf2 is buytter smooth and l4d is a bunch of jerky crap at 60fps.its only with the mouse tho moving as strafing around zoey with a-d isnt too bad. strafe around zoey in l4d with a-d and move the mouse to control strafe and zoey starts to vibrate slighty.

it seems to make things look like there is no vsync when clearly its forced in game and in ati CCC.

i have tried everything! :(

i mostly crounch slowly and strafe around zoey by moving my mouse and watch her up close.she will distort slighty when i move which would make reading anything like health pack on her back im****ible.

hi mate

to be sure i double checked with vsync off in CCC and in game and almost all the combos u can think of involving vsync and l4d.

nothing works turning off vsync in l4d and having it forced in ati CCC results in vsync remaining off (weird) and fps around 60-80 in the starting bit of l4d dead air.

im in the spawn zone strafing and turning with my mouse and i can see vsync(tearing) but also the horrible jutter/tearing of objects in the spawn room and on zoey etc. standing still not moving the mouse or turning seems prety fine.

TF2 is also a lot better and so is call of duty world at war but on close inspection in cod WAW(strafing around trucks) u can still see tearing on an objects or it will vibrate.

name tags in l4d are on example.strafing left and right without the mouse result in smooth and clearly readable names but once u turn with the mouse and move! juttery names which are hard to read.

im gonna try and find a diff mouse and maybe try windows 7 as a last resort.

but this is a pretty clean vista sp2 install too and im at my wits end argh!

pretty interesting at the bottom he mentions microstuttering when full circle strafing with the mouse.

thats exactly what i am getting.maybe im too fussy and most people dont notice it?

im using box anti aliasing im going to try the others now though.

its honestly driving me insane and i cant play games like this.so far i find tf2 acceptable but not l4d.

also idont think its valve as cod waw shows it slighty but overall much smoother than l4d.

gpu-z shows the card @ 16x also and i have disabled my overclocks and ram timings to default and still i get stutter on characters when i move around.

dma?

i have the HDD in normal ide mode without drivers as i remember they always gave a bsod fast in windows when used.

ive never noticed it before tho and i doubt its textures loading as it persists through the level in l4d with 4gb of ram and 1gb vid ram with 2x aa?

the ony things left in my mind is

mouse/keyboard
bios update
pagefile?
some dx 9 weirdness?

im gonna try those 4 later on 2nite when i have time and see how it does overall its looking worse as i elimate more and more things.

ps i do have advanced HDD performance mode ticked under vista and remote assitance, uac, system restore, indexing etc turned off and the performance in tf2 and desktop pleases me and it super smooth!

it seems it in is dma mode although as i said before my sata is not using the f6 driver and just legacy ide i think.

also its there is tf2 just not as bad as l4d.its not vsync as with it off i can se eit with 120odd fps as well.

atm im finding it in all 3 games i have installed which are Team fortress 2 left 4 dead and call of duty world at war.

tf2 @ 60fps vsync seems fine it takes great eyes to see stutter or object tearing/vibrating.

cod waw is the same only strafing around a truck on close inpection rreveals a slight microstutter but only visable if you look for it or are really fussy and demand 100% smoothness in offline games.

l4d on the other hand is rubbish.in spawn strafing around seems like 30fps on the characters when its 55-59 with vsync and around 80 odd without vsync.

ive also tried turning off the pagefile and mess with bios settings to no avail.

im thinking now my northbridge might be overheating but i duno i never noticed this until a few motnhs ago and ive neglected to adress it since and it persisting from windows xp 32 bit to vista 64bit.

xp was much smoother tho i must admit!

in more tests i see in l4d its completly butter smooth if i don ot touch the mouse.

its a shame l4d doesnt have the ability to look left and right with the keyboard(only strafe) as i could navigate a whole level and it would be so smooth.

im wondering does this mean my razer is faulty and if so why doesnt tf2 show it as bad as l4d and why is the desktop fine?

uninstalling the drivers did not work so i must try to find a new mouse to try tomorrow with a fresh win 7 install.

any ideas chaps?

i find it doubtful that cpu bottlenecking is the problem i mean...

its in all games for a start, its just l4d is by far the worst

and it only happen when using the mouse.navigate a level via keyboard and viola its perfectly smooth.

my montor is a dell 2007 1680x1050 32bit 60hz as well and seems working perfectly, if i have too ill test that too!!

anyways in a few hrs ill try a new mouse and keyboard and eliminate those.

dont get me wrong strumpusplunket i know what u mean about strafing and yes that does exist on this lcd and i do notice it.strafing produces blurring and a little smearing but it generally still smooth.

its when i start the use my mouse to turn in l4d i get the horrible tearing/jitter on the other ai characters and its a lot worse than normal smearing.

also HazardO

1) The CPU is bottlenecked, and the high message rate of the mouse isn't working well when the CPU is busy.

perhaps ill try l4d later on my uncles quad core system.

2) There is some interference with the wireless connection to the mouse.

its a wired razer habu @ 1000hz 2000dpi.

3) The mouse is stuffed.

perhaps, ill again test another later

I'd missed the bit where you said you don't get the problem when moving with the keyboard.

yep running around in l4d without using the mouse is so smooth comapred to when mouse turning is introduced.

How smoothly can you move windows around the desktop with the mouse? If you run prime 95, does moving windows around become problematic?

havent got prime 95 atm im on vista i might try it,and window moving seem that they tear and smear an awful lot, my mate says his vista 64 premium does it too,i had it on xp tho which i thought was err a bit weird.you can clearly see the edges of the box window from my documents distort into tearing lines or step ladder effect when dragging across the desktop.

the mouse on the desktop seems smooth tho.i thought i had a problem with folders doing this on my last round of formats between xp and vista 64 when trying to elimate this problema few months ago but i gave up.folders would be quite slow coming up and tear when moved or dragged.

this tearing sems a lot like mouse turning in l4d and how is distorts the image with its jerky ness.its visable when l4d is ran in windows mode and you just keyboard strafe without the mouse.making it run full screen takes away all keyboard microstutter but mouse stutter remains!

perhaps its related :o also moving or draggina firefox window over say the my documents window u can see the firefox window lag when dragged leaving a trail.

weird too i thought i had my aero and option for folders setup to be snappy and lag free :/

nah no hairs on the sensor i can assure you ah im going to just take l4d over to my uncles see see what its like on his and birng back his mouse/keyboard.

i was messing about in l4d checking cpu temps and usage etc.temps r fine 57c load and usage is 100% when using multicore option and 80% when not.

im pretty convinced by studying the jitter that when multicore is disabled in l4d options its a tiny tiny bit smoother.

perhaps this is really cpu related after all :(

the last i checked my overclock was stable i never have blue screens just this damm jitter with the mouse.

i have ran tf2 there also and apparantly my cpu usage is 100% on both cores just like l4d but tf2 is mile and miles ahead in smoothness and 60fps.

gfx card temps are 54c idle and around 80c load which seems fine.

ok mates a few updates

i have had a few days to test a different mouse and i managed to install my l4d on another pc which is an ocuk built Q6600 3.2ghz 4gb 8800 GTX system.

l4d exibits the same turning jitteryness much overall i think its a bit smoother than my pc.

after fiddling around with both tf2 and l4d i can now see the same thing in tf2 when things get really hectic on the server.im at 60fps but it seems like lag on a 32 man server when in reality my connection never lags.

in l4d the dual core option seems to make things a little better so im glancing at my cpu wondering is it to blame?

its being used at 100% in both tf2 and l4d which im thinking as someone else said its causing some kind of low fps feeling in those when you have 60fps and are in a non demanding area graphically.

also Yurihyuga 2.8 400bus is my max limit here as my ram doesnt seem to go futher.maybe its my board but i cant no matter what voltage or settings or bios get past 400bus with 4 sticks of ram.

im full on raging here about this tbh.l4d now is unplayable and tf2 at times can be quite annoying as well.

can my cpu simply not handle these games smoothly?

its not the ram or voltages or overclock as i have tried it all but heh ill try again later for a laugh!

dr who can you tell me how to find out if my gfx and hdd share irq? i have tried turning off my pagefile with no difference though :(

heres a bump for an old thread!

nope it never got resolved, most games are fine but source with multicore option is terrible imo, i have to turn it off and take the fps hit just for smooth gaming, and yes this is also present in l4d2.

in conclusion there is no fix apart from not using a mouse, i think its related to using multiple cores as this shows the most improvement in source games, i can also slightly see it in COD WAW but u need to contantly strafe turn and look at objects for a sort of shimmer/tearing judder which 80% of peeps wont notice.

i tried multiple pcs with ATI+NVIDIA nothing works so just give up and get used to it i think, its not software either so i guess we may leave this thread at that unless someone has actually found a fix! :)

yea mate i think u have to be picky about it to notice but i like my extreme smoothness, widows xp with l4d without multicore option and about 60fps+ ALL the time and its actually butter smooth like gaming in the old days before multicore.

and yea i notice this with 60fps, i use vsync so until decent 120HZ monitors comes so i can vsync at 120fps i dont think ill get to test it at around 100fps
