so guys i duno where to look or wot to do now but im really fussy about gaming on my pc.100fps on windows xp with a proper defrag is amazing and i know the feel of it but recently i have been using 60fps with vsync and been pleased about smoothness.

now recently or i think it is recent as its been a long time and my memory sucks but i have been having horrible tearing or stutter when i move around in some games.

l4d is the big problem when i turn or move holding A or D and move the mouse u can see zoey and bill stutter while standing still, almost as if v sync was not on.the thing is im using vsync at have around 40-60 fps mostly around 55 which im starting to think is the problem?

tf2 is butter smooth compared to l4d and so is call of duty world at war although if i strafe around say a vehicle holding A and moving my mouse i can still detect slight abnormalies on the truck.almost like a very slight judder?

i have tried all settings and windows xp sp2 and vista sp3 + 4 formats and nothing has worked.latest drivers too and wot i consider a well kept system.xp is far smoother than vista in l4d but the problem still is visable.

im starting to suspect wot seems like a perfectly working razer habu mouse.

unless fps drop below 30 thats unlikely to be the cause, sounds like a (gfx) driver issue prob, try an older driver, it may be that the latest one is causing an issue

nope it was doing this on my old 8800 gtx which died as well.

tried 2 gfx card 5 formats diff operating systems and can find nothing!

tf2 is buytter smooth and l4d is a bunch of jerky crap at 60fps.its only with the mouse tho moving as strafing around zoey with a-d isnt too bad. strafe around zoey in l4d with a-d and move the mouse to control strafe and zoey starts to vibrate slighty.

it seems to make things look like there is no vsync when clearly its forced in game and in ati CCC.

i have tried everything! :(

i mostly crounch slowly and strafe around zoey by moving my mouse and watch her up close.she will distort slighty when i move which would make reading anything like health pack on her back im****ible.

tried it while only using the ingame/ccc option and not both? also, do you get the same symptoms with it off, or just "normal" tearing?

I've had it in some games before, mainly 3rd person ones, where its all smooth and perfectly fine, until you try and look around while moving. I always put this down to poor coding since i only ever got it in console port rubbish.

hi mate

to be sure i double checked with vsync off in CCC and in game and almost all the combos u can think of involving vsync and l4d.

nothing works turning off vsync in l4d and having it forced in ati CCC results in vsync remaining off (weird) and fps around 60-80 in the starting bit of l4d dead air.

im in the spawn zone strafing and turning with my mouse and i can see vsync(tearing) but also the horrible jutter/tearing of objects in the spawn room and on zoey etc. standing still not moving the mouse or turning seems prety fine.

TF2 is also a lot better and so is call of duty world at war but on close inspection in cod WAW(strafing around trucks) u can still see tearing on an objects or it will vibrate.

name tags in l4d are on example.strafing left and right without the mouse result in smooth and clearly readable names but once u turn with the mouse and move! juttery names which are hard to read.

im gonna try and find a diff mouse and maybe try windows 7 as a last resort.

but this is a pretty clean vista sp2 install too and im at my wits end argh!

pretty interesting at the bottom he mentions microstuttering when full circle strafing with the mouse.

thats exactly what i am getting.maybe im too fussy and most people dont notice it?

What is your AA mode set to in the CCC panel? If Edge-Detect, try Box. Also, if you run CPU-Z is your link mode for the GPU at x16? If it's less, say x8 you may notice some stuttering. :)

I know what hes on about, and its not caused by lack of gpu power, the aa modes might have an effect though.

im using box anti aliasing im going to try the others now though.

its honestly driving me insane and i cant play games like this.so far i find tf2 acceptable but not l4d.

also idont think its valve as cod waw shows it slighty but overall much smoother than l4d.

gpu-z shows the card @ 16x also and i have disabled my overclocks and ram timings to default and still i get stutter on characters when i move around.

Maybe the game is loading in textures and other data when you move or see something you've not seen before - hard disks set to use DMA?

dma?

i have the HDD in normal ide mode without drivers as i remember they always gave a bsod fast in windows when used.

ive never noticed it before tho and i doubt its textures loading as it persists through the level in l4d with 4gb of ram and 1gb vid ram with 2x aa?

the ony things left in my mind is

mouse/keyboard
bios update
pagefile?
some dx 9 weirdness?

im gonna try those 4 later on 2nite when i have time and see how it does overall its looking worse as i elimate more and more things.

ps i do have advanced HDD performance mode ticked under vista and remote assitance, uac, system restore, indexing etc turned off and the performance in tf2 and desktop pleases me and it super smooth!

Vync works by maintaining even frame rates, perhaps your graphics settings are too high, this would make the game drop to say 45 frames or 30. If that is the case then that may cause the stutter you are seeing ingame.

From memory the Source engine always seemed to suffer from stutters when it was loading data into memory, perhaps the game itself is at fault. Perhaps this may be fixed with an upcoming patch.

Go to the device manager and locate the controller that's connected to your hard drive. Then look on the channel which the drive is on and ensure that it's on something like ultra DMA rather than PIO.
I have a similar problem at work where games sometimes lurch due to the virus checker checking game data files when it loads parts of the game (eg textures) that haven't been seen before. Turn off virus checker - no lurching!

it seems it in is dma mode although as i said before my sata is not using the f6 driver and just legacy ide i think.

also its there is tf2 just not as bad as l4d.its not vsync as with it off i can se eit with 120odd fps as well.

Is it only source games you have this problem?
I have stutter problems with source games. CSS and the bundled games with the box.
There are threads from years ago that are still active on the steam forums about performance issues...

yeah dident half life 2 suffer with this on release turned out to be sound problems they released a patch and it was fixed from what i remember.

atm im finding it in all 3 games i have installed which are Team fortress 2 left 4 dead and call of duty world at war.

tf2 @ 60fps vsync seems fine it takes great eyes to see stutter or object tearing/vibrating.

cod waw is the same only strafing around a truck on close inpection rreveals a slight microstutter but only visable if you look for it or are really fussy and demand 100% smoothness in offline games.

l4d on the other hand is rubbish.in spawn strafing around seems like 30fps on the characters when its 55-59 with vsync and around 80 odd without vsync.

ive also tried turning off the pagefile and mess with bios settings to no avail.

im thinking now my northbridge might be overheating but i duno i never noticed this until a few motnhs ago and ive neglected to adress it since and it persisting from windows xp 32 bit to vista 64bit.

xp was much smoother tho i must admit!
