while attempting to copy files on my Vista SP1 (RTM) system, im getting about 25MB/s write speed to a 74gb raptor

benchmarks seem to incidate i should be getting about 70 MB/s

and this is from gigabit network to disk as well as disk to disk. Any ideas where im going wrong ?

Those are the sort of speeds you'll get from a gigabit LAN. If the disk to disk copy is from the same disk then again the speed is about right.

To get a true idea of the write speed you'll need to either use something like the pro version of HDTach (which needs a blank drive) or another disk, preferably a RAID0 array which will read significantly faster than the target disk to ensure that the target drive is the bottleneck.

im not that bothered if thats about right

id never actually bothered looking at numbers before i tryed SP1, but couldnt remember how bad it was before. I'm doing a fresh install at some point, so will make a point of taking down the before as well as the after speeds :)

You might want to look at teracopy, it's a free utility that takes over windows drag and drop copies.

From my main PC to the server also running XP I used to get ~15-20MB/sec. With teracopy I now get 40MB/sec.

Main PC
3.2Ghz Core2, 3GB XP 32bit etc

Server
AMD 3600X2 1GB XP etc

Switch
Gigabite GS608 + GS605 ( only use two switches as I have a single cat6 cable between two clusters)

Also playing with freenas... hoping for better results now I've got around XP dropping the lan after 10GB or so.
