Slow nas uploads

Hello. I have a Synology 718+ with the 16gb ram upgrade.
When I try to upload something from my Surface tablet I get very slow speeds fluctuating between 70Kbps and 150Kbps. But when I upload from my PC I can get a stable 4.5Mbps. Help me work out what is throttling the Surface.

Both are connected to the nas by wifi, and the nas is connected to my router by ethernet.
Both have a VPN, and turning it off has no affect.

I always get confused between bites and bytes. I've just done a speed test on both....

The PC is coming back at 13.99 Mb Download speed. 11.7Mb upload. 23 ms ping time.
The Surface is coming back at 16.47 Mb Download speed. 1.44Mb upload. 20 ms ping time.

That's low as i'm with Plusnet and it should be 66Mb download with 19Mbps upload. I'm not getting anywhere near that. And the weird thing is at the start of the year, I was told I hadn't been getting the right speeds and that it had now been rectified and then they sent me a £200 cheque. I remember checking the speeds then, and they were around the stated 66 and 19. That didn't last long!

Both PC and Surface are using 5Ghz.

Both have had Windows 10 returned to a fresh install via the reset this pc option in the last 2 weeks. The Surface was having the same problem before, which is why I did this. The PC had barely been used in 2 years, and wouldn't shutdown after updates, then after having to switch off manually would lose te update, and then the process would start over..

The nas was mainly bought so I could access my films and tv from the dialysis ward, and it does that job fine.

I'll try the Safe mode and network thing on the PC now, will then have to find out how to boot the Surface into safe mode to try that. I think its power and volume up.

Thanks for helping.

Ok the PC shows similar speeds in safe mode with networking.
When I try to boot the Surface into Safe mode with networking, wifi doesn't work. It's like its just booted into safe mode. I tried by pressing 5 and F5, same outcome.

Thanks for your help guys, I will work down the list when I get home. I can test the Surface tomorrow on the hospital's WiFi. And I will see what I get when I hotspot it to my phone later. My mobile connection is pretty good.

I did originally have the router connected via a powerline and it would only do 100Mbps. I connected it to the router by ethernet and then I could change it to 1000Mbps. I thought that might have improved things but no.

Also try switching to 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi and see if that makes a difference.

Tried that, same results.

There's no Ethernet bottleneck. All of the speeds the OP is getting are well below what a 100Mbps connection will handle. Changing it to Gigabit, if it isn't already, will make zero difference.

The OP is basically getting the same speeds on the broadband speed test as he does to the NAS. That takes the NAS and its connection to the router out of the equation.

For some reason, the Surface has a massively underperforming wireless connection. So it's either the Surface itself or the wireless router it's connecting to. Testing the Surface on a different wireless network will help to narrow it down.

I tried connecting the Surface to my phone by hotspot and got... 10Mbps download 8.9Mbps upload on the mobile and 9.9Mbps download 8.2Mbps on the Surface.

So the Surface is capable of better speeds than I've been getting from Plusnet. I'm gonna call them now, but know they will just say connect to the router by cable, and I don't have a compatible cable go do so. But at least they can tell me what I should be getting.

Ok, sorry for no update. I've been having tests done at hospital and hadn't felt up to tackling this problem.

I was browsing the plusnet forums, and one of the experts replied to someone else having the same problem by saying..

The 10/100/1000 Mb is the speed the interface (network) is capable of running at, the higher the number the faster it can run. But this is only applicable to wired components and all of these components must have equal or better interfaces to get maximum throughput.

However, as you are using Wireless this is an instant bottle neck.

So it looks like the only way to get super speeds is to use Ethernet, which isn't possible as the router is in the hall and the PC is around 25ft away.

Would this give me grounds to leave Plusnet?

In simple term's no, as long as they are providing the advertised speed for the service you signed up for.

If you did decide to leave Plustnet and go with a different ISP how would that change things as you would still be connecting to the router via wireless from your PC / Laptop.

From my limited knowledge, a better router would allow faster speeds through WiFi. And not stunt it like Plusnet does. I was looking to join Zen.

It's almost always possible to use a cabled connection if you want to.

I have really thick walls so drilling is out of the question. And running a wire under the door and around the skirting boards would look tacky. Is there a more technical way of doing it that I don't know about?

More than a metre thick? If they're less than that you can buy SDS bits that'll reach.

No I don't live in a nuclear bunker :D they're 40cm thick. I remember the sky bloke having trouble when I first moved in. But even though that's possible I'd rather not have the wire going around the living room. Maybe I could move the PC against the wall where the router is the other side, if I don't find another solution.

Only other option is a power line adapter, something like NETGEAR PL1000-100UKS PL1000 Powerline 1000 Mbps for around £30

I have a TP-Link Powerline that has 500Mbps on it.

If you can draw a diagram of your network then I might be able to provide a better solution.

I will try to do that today.

I'm currently awaiting a call back from Plusnet about the home network speed restrictions their routers have, and whether I can leave for nothing. Current exit cost is £120, there is 12 months of a 18 month contract left.

From googling the above problems, I read a thread on their forums that said their router only gives the top interface speeds through the ethernet connection.

On the call to Plusnet earlier they didn't dispute this.

I don't need the fastest speeds possible, I'd just like quicker than I have. And If I can get 40Mpbs download through the wall on wifi I should be able to get more than 14Mbps upload on the NAS.

To be fair to Plusnet they have been great today. A manager there has said if their router cannot give me better NAS speeds through wifi, then they will give me money off or back, as a goodwill gesture so I can buy what I need.

Here is how everything is setup.

It says the PC is only 100Mb/s and says the same when I look at the controllers settings in windows. The motherboard is a P6T Deluxe and should have dual gigabyte LAN.
