Slow progress?

Took me 6 months to pass, and I'd been driving motorbikes for 18 months before, so I'd already got road sense. You'll appreciate all the training when you take your test!

Your instructor should be pacing things according to your ability, some people take longer to pick things up, some people crumble slightly when they have to do something with somebody else watching their every move (talking from experience on that)

Also some instructors would rather you completely get your head round something before moving on whilst others will do the basics of everything then practice everything at the end to get it perfect so its all relative.

TBH it took me quite a while to get the basics down but once I did everything else came together relatively quickly.

Listen mate - he's learning to drive OF COURSE he aint any good, if he was he would have had a license by now!
Some people are just naturally bad at driving though, even if they are learning. Others have an aptitude for it.

I did some basic driving around an airfield with my Dad in his company car and when it came to taking lessons I just said "I want you to put me in for my test" on my very first lesson. Ended up having 7 in total as "prep work".

That feeling will last all of 20 minutes... chances the OP will take it on the chin and put it down to experience then pass on his second test.
Unless you know the op how can you say that? If I had failed my confidence would have taken a huge knock and would have put me back about 10 weeks, maybe more. My instructor knew that confidence under "pressure" was my main problem so we worked under the assumption that I would only take a test when she was 99% confident I would pass.

I've been in a car with some people who have passed their test and still don't have a basic understanding of car control or the rules of the road.

Does this not concern you even one little bit? :/
And I'd hold off with the personal insults about people being morons too.

Yes it does, and I have never got in a car with those people behind the wheel since. The reason for me making that comment was to show that Joe Bloggs saying "yeah well I passed my test with only 10 hours of lessons" doesn't mean a great deal. Yes he might be a great driver then again he might have fluked a test. To me a driving licence should mean that you have a good understanding of the road not just that you can do enough to convince someone your ok behind the wheel for half an hour.

The moron comment wasn't personal to anyone. It wasn't even specific to the forum, I assume that there will be a lot of peer pressure from friends saying "oh well I've done x,y and z and I've got my test booked so you must be rubbish."

Why not just book one lesson with another instructor and see what they think of your driving? They may say you're much better than your current instructor thinks. Or they my put you at the same level as your current instructor. I guess at least you'll know where you're at then.

Wasn't targetted at anyone specific or specifically at the forum, I was refering to 'people' as in just that, ie people in the real world.

Sorry I didn't word it better :o

6 months... that is just ridiculous IMO. Nothing takes 6 months to learn...

Like Mr Clarkson i was made a Dr of engineering twice in the post and have just received my law diploma out of a cracker, no spending 6 years studying for me thanks, anything that takes that long quite clearly can't be worth it

That sounds like a good idea.

It is all dependent on the individual. If you think you are going at a slow pace then tell him. He will probably give you a summary of your performance in his eyes. I can understand your eager to pass your test, but dont rush things. They take time, and Im sure you would prefer passing your test first time with few minors instead of rushing through everything and not being 100% confident. I took 25 lessons (around that anyway) which I thought was a bit much, but I passed 1st time with 2 minors, so it was money well spent.

Im on my third lesson, already been on dual carriage way, and doing roundabouts on my 4th lesson :p

You must take into consideration, that some people and myself, are car nerds since a very young age :D

I remember asking my parents how to drive a manual when I was like five. :p

I have had roughly 45 hours worth of lessons ready for test on 40 but waiting for a test now :( tbh I am glad of the extra time, yes it is expensive but it gives you extra time to get badly needed experience.

Being a driving instructor has to be one of the most difficult and taxing jobs out there.

Thats taking it too far, casualty people, firemen, brain surgeons, labourers are all more taxing and difficult that sitting in a car for 7 hrs a day/

How does being a car nerd from an early age help?

I passed with 10 2 hour lessons, i would've found 1 hour lessons too short.

I was on the dual carriageway on the 3rd lesson, and had done all types of parking by the 5th.

Does sound a bit like he's taking too long, but hard to know. If you practice outside of lessons, then yeah its taking too long. If you don't then i'm not sure.

I used my lessons (after the first one) to get to and from college.... it would take me an hour on the bus or 30 mins cycling anyway... The instructor didn't mind at all.

I'm getting about another hour a week in my mum's car.

to anyone learning to drive

are you still getting help to do things? if so then you are not ready for test
untill you can drive without any help consistantly then its not worth going for test

some instructors do take the p##s as to regards dragging it out for the money but they are few and far between

all instructors have "thier way" of doing things just becasue one person learns a particular way to another does not mean its wrong

i myself have various learners on my books and can say that catorgorically that they do learn at different levels and each person is dealt with according to their needs and abilities to get to be safe drivers NOT just to pass the test some peaple take very little time and others take a lot longer but yet i am the same instructor its down to the individual as to how well they pickup and perfect their Technique, its no goood knowing the basics especially if its starts going wrong and dont know how to correct it.

an assesment drive with another instructor is a good idea tho just to see and if they also say the same thing then you know he aint pulling your leg

good luck with it

I said 'one of the most difficult'...

And why's it taking it too far?

Allowing people who've probably never been in a car before, out in public with very very little skills?

A lot of skill and awareness has to be put into that job in order to stop a scared and nervous learner from doing something catastrophic.
