Hi. My girlfreind's computer is booting to XP very slowly. About 3-4 minutes. You can see it slowly loading each program in the notification area. Ive tried a file copy and it's running at about 1mb/s. Its a packard bell celeron 2.6 with an 80gb maxtor drive

Ive ran a maxtor disk test from floppy and it says no problems.

I figure then it's XP so I need to reinstall. Its an old installation that has had a lot of crap put on it.

Any ideas

A file copy on the one disk won't tell you the true speed of the drive because you're reading and writing to the same device. However if it was a large file that was being copied then 1MB/s is slow.

Before you go as far as a reinstall check that the disk isn't running in PIO mode. There may be something in the properties of the controller in Device Manager which tells you this but the other option is simply to remove the controller in Device Manager. Once you do that Windows will want to reboot at which point the controller should be re-added as a new device, hopefully back in UDMA mode.

OK thanks, I have to reinstall anyway as loads of other problems that require a reinstall, but I dont want to do that and then find out its the hard drive thats the problem. Id rather get a new drive and install from scratch.

The files were a bunch of 5mb raw files. I watched each one copy at about 4 or 5 secons each. That's really slow.

Ill have a look at that pio thing

cheers

Masten
