Smart data & corrupt drives

Under XP my Smart data for 3 hdd's was around 40c idle, for a 160gb maxtor, a 320Gb & 500GB Western Digital. However my WDC 250GB 'WD2500JS' runs at about 54 idle and gets hotter (about 66 If I remember correctly)

Has anyone had experiences with incorrect temperatire readings?

Also I have a feeling that the 160gb drive might have gone 'bad', can anyone recommend a way of testing it?

Turns out my drive 250Gb, may have just given up(I think).
It didnt have anything on it so im not certain, my Vista started to close operating system processes. It did this twice when I was copying stuff from another drive, but now its unplugged its hasnt happened recently.

Also anyone got any ideas why hd tune and other programs arent detecting my drives properly in vista (dell version), but is fine in xp sp2?
