Smart meter rollout

I agree with this. Why should I end up having to pay for something that I already have control over anyway?

Irrelevant as there is no additional charge plus you pay for your current meter among othed things in the form of standing charge which will continue when the smart meter is installed

They will have fun replacing mine. My meter is in the the utility room behind a kitchen cupboard with a worktop on it. The cupboard would have to come out to replace it. They wanted to renew my meter a few months ago but couldn't because of this. It was the house developers in 2000 that must have placed it there.

It's also in a substantial converted Edwardian 1904 house and mobile reception is dire inside the thick walls. So it wouldn't get a reliable signal anyway.

A Government policy resulting from lobbying by the energy companies and those supplying the meter tech. They are all very much to blame, corrupt ****es.

Smart meters are a Government requirement as is the timetable and the requirements of the install. So many things that we blame the energy utilities for are actually a consequence of Government or EU policy.

I'm pretty neutral on smart meters I don't think the pros or cons are particularly large.

Regarding security though the data is being sent to the collection company via the mobile networks, I thought one of the touted features was that you could have a small LCD meter in your living room showing you your current consumption, I would assume that data goes over wifi?

I'm for smart meters, plenty of benefits for the average consumer. At the same time the argument of 'we don't need security, the data is useless to hackers' is always a flimsy one, so the government/suppliers have to demonstrate to the public that the system is secure.

So many tin foil hat wearers in this thread!

Do people really think that anybody is interested in when they make a cup of tea?

As has been pointed out, meters are replaced anyway and as far as possible the upgrades will be done as part of that schedule.

The cost will be offset by the reduction in meter readers wasting their time trudging round.

The utility companies adding units to scam us? WTF? Do you manually read your "phone meter" or rely on the provider monitoring it and not defrauding you?
