Absolutely! While stuck in the 56 mph rolling road block I often contemplate just how much money was wasted on the inevitable feasibility study and all the rest of the codswallop that would have gone along with putting that particular section in place just for someone to ignore it because they can go 0.4 mph quicker than the truck in front. Of course they probably can't so after attempting the overtake for a couple of miles they then tuck back in to where they were just in time for the next truck to pop out and the cycle starts again. Drives me insane!

No cameras, all it would take would be gantry cameras feeding an ANPR system on those sections. Start ticketing every HGV that breaks the regulation and they'll soon stop doing it.

Did anybody see Motorway Cops last night 
HGV driver went for miles in a Red X lane with a cop car flashing him for miles and finally pulls him over.
The HGV driver said "Officer you will find I am a much better driver than you and can see from my vantage point there is nothing up front, if this goes to court I will win"
Obviously he didn't.

Some parts of the smart motorways now have the automatic Red X ticket system switched on. So if you pass under a Red X the speed cameras will automatically take a photo of your car and issue you a nice 3 points.
There's no reason this shouldn't be switched on for every gantry, the technology is already in place.
You can have a public campaign to ask people not to drive in red X lanes, which I'd bet 98-99% of the population will follow. But a minority will still be ignorant, so best way to deal with them is automated fine and points when they ignore it.
This is very true, the system is going to get switched on throughout the country, its just been trialled in some parts at the moment.
Working on the motorway i find once someone goes through the Red X then a number of others follow like sheep.
Its a dangerous game, ive had a dont know how many close calls with vehicles nearly running into the back of me at an accident due to idiots ignoring the Red X.
There needs to be some public campaigns but these dont seem to happen anymore.
Pretty sure national highways run public service messaging campaigns on this topic already. I have seen/heard one recently.
I don’t know how many time I have heard the ‘keep left’ advert on Spotify at this point but there was a time that ad was played every other ad break. It clearly made next to no difference mind…

I've found this since they knocked a section of the A5 down to 40 on my commute to replace the barriers.
Most people are happily chugging along around 40, once special flower flys down land 2 at the normal NSL and then you'll get people who were quite happy following me at 40 pull out and start nailing it. It's becoming almost dangerous trying to stick to the temp limit while lorries/vans/assorted **** ends fly past you at the normal limit.
Unfortunately they've spent time and money setting up avg cameras to cover the whole section but haven't turned them on in the last 3 months or so.

It’s been in use in the USA for a couple of years and only works on mapped roads. If the road is mapped, it works, if it’s not mapped, it doesn’t. They publish a map in the USA so I’d expect one to be published here as well.
If no different to any other system in use in that you are still legally in control of the car. The way of doing it is just different. There are negatives in that it only works in select roads and it has a monthly subscription (woohoo the reoccurring revenue model is very much alive in cars!).
You could argue that if you don’t have your hands on the wheel, your reaction time to take over control will be longer, a lot longer in fact.
For level 2 you could probably argue that they should require the camera system and the wheel sensor to be legal but as it stands, it’s only one or the other.

Think this is mainly to mitigate human errors in driving as opposed to giving the driver a break. The onboard systems can likely react far faster then a human to the surroundings...also, if the person is taking their eyes off the road/driving tired then the system is help mitigate accidents caused by this as they may well do the same whilst in full control of the vehicle.
so are other cars certified for UK roads - if not why not ? the article suggested only certain motorway sections are legit which other cars would need to identify,
yes , uses eye sensing isn't that part of the requirement (or upcoming eu one) such that tesla is precluded, since I thought theirs, in particular, was still turned off.
(qualification of eye tracking with masks and sun glasses has been tricky too)
e: so fords niche is, they are the first hands off to be UK qualified

What I wrote is correct, it’s still a ‘level 2’ ADAS system. The driver is still legally in control of the vehicle and it’s subject to all the same rules regarding speed, G-force, changing lanes, and most importantly driver monitoring, as any other system.
The driver needs to show they are paying attention to the road and other manufacturers require you to keep your hand on the wheel and they measure this with a torque sensor.
The only difference here is that they use eye tracking so you don’t have to keep your hands on the wheel. If you turn round to your passenger or mess around with something else, it stops the car.
The trade off is that it only works on mapped roads and that data is loaded into the car. Others systems rely on just reading the lines and is designed to work on any dual carriageway.
I’m not sure what else there is to say other than I’m pretty sure it’s the same system that Chevy have used in the states for quite a few years called super cruise. They own Cruise Automotive who developed it and I guess they are now licensing it to compete with the likes of Mobile Eye etc.. So yes, this is ‘new’ for the U.K. but it’s really not ‘new’ in that it doesn’t really do anything above what an existing ASAS system does other than monitors the driver in a different way.
There really isn’t that much to get excited about and a lot of newer well spec cars already have equivalent functionality, you just have to keep your hands on the wheel. Media reporting has just got a bit excited over it.

but - you do wonder, whether in car videos from the FSD drivers whose tesla crashed between the wheels of large semi's, look similar - everyone has a plan until the unexpected happens
if anything the exposure of chagpt making things up, starts to show public, how, transposed into the world of driving, AI learning can have fatal errors.
If AI driving is safer than human driving then postive for the world, whether one in however many million crashes they WILL have, is irrelevant and slowly over time that will reduce even further as we learn..
Just like flying aircraft, they crashed a lot at the beginning!
