Smart phone that doesn't need charging every night?

In the last 48 hours I got the following on my Galaxy S, running 2.2.1 Froyo: Docs JS8 ROM.

48 hours after taking off the charger...
11 hours with wifi on and connected to my router.
Screen on with 34% brightness for 3 hours total.
30min worth of phone calls total.
A few txt's.
Running a Live wallpaper.
Movie Finder. (starts itself in the background !!!
Killed google maps several times as it keeps restarting itself in the background!!!
Facebook app set to check for updates every hour.
Gmail using push and only got 1 email which I cleared.
Llama running (this checks the local masts and when at home enables my wifi, when at work enables silent mode.
Beautiful Widgets set to update every hour.
Downloaded and installed a few updated apps from the market.
Ran Titanium Backup three times to update the backup of apps I downloaded from the market.
When wifi not on, 3G was enabled at all times.
GPS off.
Bluetooth off.

And when I finaly went to connect the phone to the charger before going to bed... 34% battery still left!

And thats not the best example, I have managed 3 days before....

Just wondering, what's the best way to prolong the life of a battery nowadays? Should you still fully drain the battery before charging or does it not matter with modern batteries?

Makes no difference.

Nope - no need with li-ions.

They only tell you to do a full charge and a full discharge on first use as this calibrates the battery meter (i.e. if you kept doing a "top up charge" the phone wouldn't know where empty or 0% is).

Cheers, I tend to charge my phone (hero) every night out of habit, good to know I'm not killing it :)

Which ROM do people think is best for battery life on the Galaxy S?

For me, without a doubt it is Doc's Rom (i.e. a ROM Kitchen generated ROM) using Froyo JS8 and JPY modem. Also use switchpro to turn everything off when possible, and at night I use screen filter. Had 5 days out of that config with my normal usage. Comparatively, I get 2 days out of CM7. The ROM Kitchen ROM is also very fast, and I think they have Gingerbread JVH up now to try. Follow the instructions for that carefully, as it's a different install process to Froyo.

Got my Galaxy S II today and am impressed, if a bit flummoxed.

I prefer it to the iPhone 4s that my work colleagues have, although I think that the Apple interface has the edge, especially with the mechanics of text input. Is there a fix for this coming in the near future? I have pianist's fingers but still end up doing lots of correction!

This is the first upgrade I've had in years since my K810i (although I've had a BB Curve for a while for work) so maybe it's just me being a pleb.

So glad that I can use GPS and maps properly for once! Flash websites work great too!

it takes a day or two to adjust to the keyboard.. :)

If you put it into airplane mode when sleeping etc, switch of wifi when not needed same with bluetooth.

What if someone wants to ring you during the night?

Orange san fran does 2 days if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, probably not if you've shortlisted the Galaxy S 2 though!

The Samsung keyboard on the SGS2 isn't great, you could either try Swype which is installed by default (long press on a text input box, select Input Method and select Swype) -- Note that Swype is 'weird', never really got on with it but might be worth looking around online for some more info before trying it.

Or for normal keyboards I've changed to this (just free atm, might buy the paid for one though):
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin.free&feature=search_result

Also heard good things about
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.cdeguet.smartkeyboardtrial

but never actually tried it.

with both of those new keyboards you might need to go to Settings -> Language and Keyboards and enable them before they'll show up in the input method list like Swype.

Give Swype a go, I've got the beta on my Desire and really like it, once you are used to it you can enter words very quickly. It's installed by default on the Galaxy as said above.

Right... that is quite weird, might take some getting used to.

I was looking at a few of the keyboard apps people were suggesting, I just wanted something along the lines of the auto-correct the BB does and it seems some of the paid-for ones cater for this, so may just bite the bullet and buy one if I can't get used to Swype. :)

Thanks for the suggestion - really interesting!

I've tried a few keyboards and find SwiftKey to be the best by far.

Maybe if you don't use it. I'm lucky to get 24 hours out of mine (I've done the battery setup stuff and on jj9). That's with either wifi or 3g on at all time, but gps off, though my reception at work is poor. My old 2g work bb lasts 4-5 days.

My milestone will last 48 hours clocked at 1.2ghz when the screen is on with very light usage. Screen off it runs at 125mhz, mind. If I text my usual 50-60 texts a day, plus some web browsing I will be down to about 40% after about 24 hours, mind.

If you don't use them that much, smart phones can get good battery life!

Might as well have a dumb phone then though!
