Smart phones - a good or bad thing?

Have a work and social identity on your phone for the emails or go 2 phone and do well enough at work that they don't sack you for ignoring out of hours calls.

I'm with the OP here, smart phones have taken over our lives. I really hate them but due to work I have to use one. I walked passed a bus stop today and there were 5 people in a line waiting for a bus fingering their smart phones, like life doesn't exist passed their phones. It was a beautiful day but instead of just looking up and enjoying the sunshine everyone had their heads in their phones

I got rid of my smart phone and replaced it with a £15 Nokia. Best decision I've made in a while. Although I might buy the £25 Nokia for dual sim. But that's about as extravagant as it'll get.

I hate 'em.

Same, I have one although not for work but I hate what they have done to the masses. I have a bus ride from my staff car park to work. It's all of about 1/2 a mile. I'm going to video it one day, standing waiting for the bus, everyone is looking at a screen. Get on the bus, everyone is looking at a screen. No one talks to anyone anymore.

I see couples out for dinner, both on their phone. 5 second pause seems all it takes for someone to get twitchy and reach for the phone. I've seen people get worried because they have missed calls worrying about what it was about. Funnily enough 10 or so years ago we all went to work without our Mrs having to phone 15 times a day like some of the people I work with.

You can see groups of people out for a meal and see how often people check their phone or start looking at it. If people did that with me I'd put my money on the table and go home.

Women I have to say are by far the worst, never looking where they are going with the face buried in a screen.

:D

Now smart phones, which are pretty much compulsory in business, allows the worker to be on call every day and every night.. Unfortunately people do not respect your privacy and allow you time off, and i find myself checking and replying to work emails at all hrs. It's just given the bosses and those above a tool to get more out of the worker.

We have a few works phones which are email-capable Nokia cameraphones from around 2005. We turn them off when the day is over. The fact that they are smartphones i.e. PDA + phone rolled into one (or not in my case), is irrelevant.

As a home user, I think smart/PDA-phones are great because they double up as a colour games console, with a considerably better battery life than a Sega Gamegear while having a bigger screen.

I leave my work phone in my bag when I'm at home. On the rare occasions it's rung I can answer it and I'm not tempted to read any emails. If there's an emergency my personal number is available to anyone who requires it (via our emergency response system).

This ****es me off to no end. Every morning as I'm walking through the train station gates there is always some woman buried in her phone expecting everyone to avoid her. I honestly do feel like ramming them from time-to-time.
