SMP Guide

didn't work - so added sudo - currently download

Yeah sorry, I keep forgetting that by default ubuntu uses sudo. Thats the first thing I removed when I installed both my ubuntu machines (neither of which I use day-to-day).

Once wxGTK is installed, run

Code:
wxconfig --list

and you should get some output like this:

Code:
Default config is gtk2-unicode-release-2.6
Default config will be used for output
Alternate matches:
  gtk2-unicode-debug-2.6

That means wxGTK is installed correctly.

Then you can try and start fahmon

Code:
cd ~/fahmonb5/src
./fahmon

If it starts, all is well and you can then get your shortcuts/scripts working (so long as you followed our instructions on the last x pages, they should work)

,all sorted* :D but OMG that was hard work - MS have nothing to fear

@ Uncle F - your a star, many thanks - if your ever in london I owe you a pint.

* well almost - I've got the 49290d issue that many others have had - I thought Mikey's version was surposed to sort that - or was i not surposed to update projects

of to check the other thread....

It shouldn't have been as difficult as it was, but never mind.

Cheers, 2.1.5b.5 includes the option to use a local file to update the projects.

If you download http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html and save it, you can then edit the incorrect data, and then use your saved version as a local update source (hopefully it should be fairly obvious how you do this)

just did that - sorry should have know that one - couldn't edit the 'view source' view - so opened in text editor and changed the 2 to a 100 - saved and updated.

All is now well. Well past my bedtime (got to get up in 6h) so forgive my inability with an unknow OS

Must say I really can't recomend ubuntu as an alturnative to windows - It makes me feel like I've never seen a PC before. Took me 5minutes to set up WinSMP and Fahmon - It's been well over 20h with Ubuntu :o

There's probably not much I can say to convince you now, but it shouldn't have taken anywhere near that long.

At least you have it running now anyway.

I know what you mean - I've had bad windows installs that have taken a whole day (oh the joy of pre sp2 disks) and 512 BB - the difference is I just knew why at the time - and that some how makes it easier.

Some (if not at lease half) if that 20h was me not reading instructions to the letter.
but I've learn a few things on the way (like inc sudo for example) so its far from wasted time.

Windows will usually always win any competition between it and Linux when it comes to ease of use, but that is down to MS being at it for many, many years. Unfortunately, while it may be easier to use Windows is a pig of an OS.

I don't blame MS really for this as considering the amount of hardware it supports and also how forgiving it is you have to expect some of the downsides. For Average Joe it is perfect. You just happen to be Mr Joe :p

Linux is getting better with user friendliness. I remember when I first used Debian years ago, it was about as user friendly as a cornered rat. Linux is also getting better when it comes to installing software with the use of package management systems. I would say that 90% of the programs I have installed have all be done using the apt-get utility in Ubuntu. Unlike Windows, any other programs, files or libraries needed are also downloaded with it if you dont already have them installed.

This goes a step further with a new project that is due to be launched very soon. It is basically a one-click package management system that can be used with any Linux distro. Deffo a step in the right direction for a standardised system of installation. http://www.cnr.com/ check it out.

Although Linux does have some issues it is far more powerful than Windows. If there were no command line it would just be a mere copy. You have to remember that in Windows the kernel and the rest of the OS is completely integrated with the GUI. Yes there is the cmd utility but it is pretty limited. In Linux the GUI merely sits on top of the OS. You can even change the GUI to a different one very easily, or use none at all! Ubuntu Edgy by default uses Gnome, but you can choose KDE if you wish or any other GUI system that may be around.

The "ultimate" OS, if there is such a thing, is probably Mac OSX. Well, for its GUI anyway. Everything is so easy on a Mac. Shame it costs both arms and a leg to get one and for your money get something that is as compatible with the rest of the world as water is with a mains socket!

Oops having read all that it was my fault leaving out changing the chmod bit, sorry! Didn't realise you needed all that gtwk stuff aswell, i thought that was for compiling it or something, atleast it works for you now, i see you've already gone above me in avg PPD :(

OK having some problems with the website!

I have posted a thread in HTML & Graphics forum but no real luck their so far. Thought I would see if any of you lot had any ideas since it appears to be a Linux problem. All the details are in that thread so I wont repeat myself here. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8982665#post8982665

If you wanna see how the website is coming along: www.aeternum.co.uk/smp.html

Please be aware that most of the styling hasn't been done so it may appear a little rough. I suggest Firefox in Windows for the best results.

Yeah I noticed that too. I have another version where the grid lines are much lighter. I just haven't got around to changing the code - want to get the other issue sorted first.

Like I said, it's a little rough :D

As mikey really - need to sort the background - really off putting :p

Any one know how to close the SMP service - or do you just wait untill attempt 20 before it starts a new WU ;)

On that front whats todays Ubuntu top tip/two hour typing torture :D

If you used finstall, just cd to the foldingathome directory then run ./folding stop.

Run ./folding start to restart it.

that what i need - thanks billy - but just reading the other thread I don't think it will help due to stanfords server problems :(

But that's why I've a few standard clients up my sleave for times like these :D
