So are the M5/M6 identical?

Someone told me these cars have identical engines and are effectively the same car but with a different body. Is this true? I thought the M6 has a better power to weight ratio?

Oh, I'm talking about the modern ones, the E63 M6 and the E60 M5.

Same engines, different bodies. M6 a bit lighter but costs more.

M5 for the win.

So which car is said to actually perform better?

I think the M6 looks much cooler but that's not to say it's the better car.

That really just does it for me. Almost as nice as the 911 Turbo.

At what age was your blindness confirmed then?

:/

50/50 apparently.

They're completely different cars though. They're both stunning in their own way.

M6 depreciates loads from new
M5 depreciates less loads from new, but still loads

Both made from cheese by a man with a hot butter knife and styled by a man on glue with an 80's beard :D

Quick mind!

The sort of people buying those cars won't give a rat's ass about depreciation. Unless you're relatively poor and desperately stretching out to try and afford one.

I strongly disagree. I think BMW's entire range is stunning (bar the 1 series, but I don't dislike it) and people need to actually evaluate the cars' image until the automatic "BMW sucks" thing kicks in. If anyone needs design lessons it's Audi and Mercedes because all their cars look identical.

new 6 series is an awful looking car imo, front end is ugly as heck, rear end is a monstrosity, and the convertible top is bordering on embarrassing.

Except the new C class merc, which is fantastic. Looks almost like the old 500/600 SEC's off of the 80's from the front. Real road presence. Would actually like one.

Would have an M5 over an M6 any day.

M6 looks too 'footballer's wifeish'.

OK, now I can understand people who hate BMWs, but I don't understand why you'd want an M5 over an M6.

The picture above of the M6 does something for me, this doesn't as much.

Footballers are always going to own expensive cars, that's life. Would you refuse an Enzo or a Veyron because Tim Cahill owns one :p

Oh, and don't label all convertibles gay. Whenever I see a nice convertible like a Carerra 4S or an SL 55 AMG it is ALWAYS driven by an executive-looking person. Mini Cooper, yes. 206cc, yes. BMW M6, NO! :D

Erm, Rather random.

Hardtop M6 for me please :D

The whole hard/soft top thing is strange. It seems to me car enthusiasts always opt for hardtops, and they do indeed look better. Where as people buying "status-symbol" cars, or posers, opt for convertible. I don't think there's any excuse to be paranoid about looking "gay" when you own something like an M6. If I were buying a 911 Turbo, I personally would order the Cabriolet version. Perhaps I'd like to show off to people, but I'd just love the sensation when you put your foot down of the wind (and unlucky bugs) smashing against your face :D

On the other hand, most soft-tops look disgusting with the hood up. Hence why the SL series is so popular. London is like an SLfest :D

The reason why enthusiasts buy Coupes is becuase convertibles are dynamically compromised.

And coming out with comments like 'I dont see why anyone would buy the M5' and 'I would so buy a Cabrio 911 Turbo' kinda reminds me of the sort of discussions people would have about cars in the 6th form common room.

And probably what I was like on OcUK when I first started posting :p

The two pictures you posted just confirm I would much rather have an M5 over an M6.

I don't like BMW's because they make feminine looking convertibles, I like them 'cos they make manly saloons with rockets under the bonnet :D.

I can see where you're coming from. The M5 is indeed cool, but to be honest you're still laughing when you drive an M6 in either hard or soft top form because it's an awesome car either way.

Fox, what's wrong with wanting a cabriolet? If it makes me gay then think that :D I think once you're in the sort of £80,000+ bracket of cars it doesn't make much difference. Oh, and a 911 Turbo cabriolet is a pussy magnet :p :D And of course driving a soft top is a completely different experience.

One thing I can't stand about the current range of BMWs is for some reason, be it the general shape or the size of the arches or whatever, is they make all wheels look tiny.

Those M6 wheels look about 15" in that picture, even though they obviously aren't.

It's worse on things like the 5 series, with the lower spec models that actually have 15/16" wheels, they make them look like the wheels were nicked from a Ford Ka...

OT: How do cars actually work as girl magnets anyway? The only time a girl who hasn't previously known me will see my car is either when I leave somewhere, or if I drop it into conversation.

And dropping what you drive into a conversation with girls is the most un-cool thing ever. Most of them don't give a stuff.
