AFAIK the 5g ipods have better battery life and i think the new ones have better life even still. You could wait for rockbox to support the new ipods as they are also cheaper than the 5g's were. Up to you though, if it weren't for rockbox i would have got a creative, both are excellent.

I don't really need to ask much about specific players at the moment, I just wanted a few suggestions of what's decent competition for the current iPod so I could go off and have a look to see what tempted me :)

Does it replace the firmware completely? is it possible to roll back to the proper Firmware if you don't like it

It doesn't replace it at all, you can 'dual boot'

My advice is that most MP3 players are basically the same but please don't be put off by the rantings of someone slagging IPODS because of a piece of software he dislikes.
All MP3 players sound good with a decent pair of headphones but what impresses me about Apple products is how you can turn the volume up really loud and I like it very LOUD.
All MP3 players sound good through a 2000 watt PA system too.
I apologise that I didn't read that you were familiar with ITunes but the majority of posts on here always have some posters declaring how crap ITunes is and how crap IPODs are and it gets on my ****.
I like my IPODs but I think my next purchase will be going back to ARCHOS which I first had about 7 years ago.
 
The only thing I take exception to there is the comment about Apple players being loud, because my 4G was too quiet until I installed rockbox on it :p
 
BTW, probably the same for all players but on the Creatives for a fact (BY LAW) there is a VOL Limitation in the EU Firmware all to do with the Froggies (French), you simply flash to the US (USA) Firmware and its major loud.

Very easy to replace/remove/dual boot. You just literally delete the rockbox folder in the root of the ipod. When you dual boot, you just have to switch the hold switch to on once the ipod starts in order for it to load the original os.

I have plenty of people handing various MP3 players to me to play something through the PA and I just plug into the headphone socket. A little bit of tweaking on the channel will always get a good sound.

You started it by spouting crap about a decent piece of software that millions around the world get on with and use very easily.
The OP wants facts and spouting rubbish like that could put him off.
(I didn't read that he already used ITunes).
 
You were the one off topic with your 1st 3 post in this thread, the OP even commented he was not wanting/happy with your input and now after getting on topic you still go on and on like a broken down Gramophone.
