So, before I dump £160 on an iPod...

The touch is nice, but Samsung have a 16gb yp-p2 in the works... somewhere, which is a lot cheaper and easily as nice :). Would only get a touch if someone works out how to get the bluetooth running.

You really act more like 16 than 50 IMO and this threads is the OP's, not your to dig at me, you feel the need use the addy in my Profile, any more I hit the little red triangle bellow your name. :)

I haven't got the slightest clue what you're on about.
Addy in profile?
Red triangle?

I'll let you carry on with your little vendetta against Apple but hope that most new buyers would see through it.
I've actually heard salesman in High Street shops putting potential buyers off because of their own personal dislike of ITunes and you reminded me of them.
Grow up.

1) Addy was my MSN Address in my Profile so you could give me crap there not in the OP's thread as you were off topic, OP commented on that, then you have go at me for pages, and sure I have gave back as good as I get.

2 ) Red Triangle is the thing at bottom of your name in this page which I just pressed now to see if some Mod can get you to keep quiet. ;)

Stop telling me to grow up, cause you cetainly do not act 50 and stop ruining OP's thread as I have said all I can to him.

I am not off topic.

The OP asked for advice about an 80 gig classic and you come on slagging off ITunes.
Putting two and two together means you are slagging of Apple which a lot of people on these forums like to do.
ITunes is not crap and therefore you gave false information.

And can you stop bringing age into this.
Age does not matter as I stated in an earlier post.

Surely it's down to personal opinion? Or are you actually saying that because so many people use iTunes, anyone who dislikes it must be wrong or just not able to use it properly?

I have an 8GB iPod Nano 2G, which I use with Winamp (plus ml_ipod). If they don't get new and future iPods working with third-party apps, it'll be the last one I ever have. Although with the crashing issues my Nano has anyway, I have a feeling I'm done with Apple after this one anyway. The iPod Mini was so much better.

you have kept the needle going , stop being so self righteous and give us all a break .

Kinda in the same shoes as the OP.

Trying to decide between the practical 80GB Classic or the 16GB Touch. The way I see it i'l be home everyday so swapping albums round on the touch shouldn't be a problem. Although having 80GB would be usefull.

However, how practical is it using the touch as an mp3 player? Can it be operated comfortably with one hand?

I personally use Anapod.
There are many many people who haven't got a clue how to use ITunes and I must admit for a new user ITunes can be a nightmare.
Over the last 5 years I've been here I can't count the amount of ITune bashing threads but as soon as you get whats going on its dead easy.
Funnily enough when certain people have asked me about MP3 players I've steered them away from Apple because I know 100% they wouldn't be capable of tagging etc.

I agree - my IPOD Mini has been on a run with me nearly everyday for about 4 years and I've lost count of the amount of times its fell off and I've kicked it 20 foot in front of me.

whats the sound quality like on the new classics and itouch? any better than the average 5g's?

the price of the new ipods is very tempting, but the sound quality is the deal clencher

Thats why you should add "IMO" when slating something, the guy above posts something nothing to do with OP's Q (me?)and then makes up something I never even stated " I cant use Itunes" and then comes back with more confusion, obv needs his Viagra tonight. :p

Battery life on the ZV:M is more then most Ipods BTW, for MP3, WMV will drain it in half the time.

As for what players - have a look at the Creative range but right now, if battery power is someone your into, then the iPod classic is very good valued per GB and battery life.

iPod Classic

Playback time (80GB model)
Music playback time: up to 30 hours when fully charged
Video playback time: up to 5 hours when fully charged
Playback time (160GB model)
Music playback time: up to 40 hours when fully charged
Video playback time: up to 7 hours when fully charged

Not sure which Creative series you've seen but I haven't found one that carries as much GB to that much battery yet. I'm not ruling out Creative is bad but I am not bashing it because I don't like them / whatever reasons.

I just don't get why people seems so defensive about their product choice without giving a fair chance to another (just on the basis of their opinion)

By the way, I'm hoping my iPod Touch will be shipped soon - then I'll do a mini review of my own opinion if you're interested next week. As for now, sites like Macrumor http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=113 has people reviewing their iPod touch already. Many claims it's on par with the iPod Nano 2nd Gen - which I had used to play through a CX300 headphones, sounded very good - I'm not an audiophile tho.

However, the value per GB for the iPod Touch is bad, so the Classic is a better option if you want more space/battery or the Touch if you like fancy gadget that can store decent amount for a week holiday rota.

Vinnie, the guy who does the Red Wine iMods said that the G6's sounded as good as the 5.5iMods, so they can't be bad ;), but there are meant to be various issues with the classics.

Well, I tried an iPod Touch today.

Best. Thing. Ever.

Would have bought it there and then if they didn't sell out in 4 hours yesterday morning.

There are a couple of reasons why I dislike Apple's attitude, and because of it I won't be buying another iPod unless its a cheapo 2nd hand jobby:

1 - They don't want you to get songs back off your ipod using their software, you have to do it in other ways.

2 - They are very picky in what you can / can't do with software on your iPod. It's like buying a PC and not being able to install any games other than the Solitaire / Pinball it comes with.

3 - They charge extortionate prices for cheap headphones in their shops that break too easily, and always try and bankrupt any other small form of competition.

4 - There are better products out there with more features for better value, but because of the size of Apple + their advertising, most of the other products are nearly unheard of.

However, the size + design of their products is second to none. So if all you want is looks / size / songs / a film or two that you have to encode properly in the allowed format then Apple is the way forward.

This is to prevent you loading your 20GB iPod up, going to your mate's house and giving him a few thousand pounds worth of music for free. I'd imagine it's more a legal restriction that Apple have to adhere to, that some random code monkey sat in his bedroom making 'iPod music ripper v3.446' doesn't care about.

...well, I dunno. Installing Doom seems pretty good to me. Along with all the other things you can put on them.

Headphones are always expensive in shops, just today I saw some EX71s for £40.

More features maybe, better value is arguable, depending how you judge it. I've not encountered a player with a better control system yet, and that is one of my more important criteria when choosing.
