Yesterday Messi scored his 6th, 7th, and 8th goals in 8 days and is up there as the best player in the world right now. How accurate is Joan Laporta's comments in the after match analysis:

After Messi took his season's tally to 34 goals on Sunday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta hailed his prize asset as: "The best player in the history of football."

The best player in the history of football?

Depends on how long he keeps it up for to be honest

Ronaldinho looked the best player ever a few years back but in hindsight no one would say he's the best player in the history of football now

Messi has been doing what he's doing now for 3 maybe 4 years but the test will be if he's still doing it in another 3 or 4 years

Right now though he looks as good as anyone there's been before him

I don't think there can be much question about him being the best player in the world at the moment, and has been for the last 2 seasons.

In the HISTORY of football however, I'm not so sure. To start throwing statements like that about, you surely need to look at a player over their whole career.

He's very very good but that statement is just hype, there's no quantifiable way to determine who was the best ever.

People talk a lot about George Best and Pele being the best ever but I've never seen them play, there's no in depth statistics on them, there is only oppinions.

Well no he isnt...best player for the past few seasons??..yes without a doubt but not in the history of football...if he keeps up the way hes playing then probably at some point he will be regarded as the best in the history of football or one of the best.

He's simply sublime and im looking forward to seeing him play at the Emirates...if i can bag a few tickets that is.

He could be the best ever, but that's something that will be agreed after his career has finished. There's no doubt that he's currently playing the best football in the world right now. But I do believe that there is too much hype over him at times especially when he scores goals against relegation fodder near the bottom of La Liga. Would EPL players get the same plaudits for scoring 2 against Hull? On the international stage, he's been a let down.

Maradona was better.

Yup, he practically single handly won Argentina the 1986 World Cup.

Until Messi can display the same kind of form he is showing now on the world stage, the label of "in history" is a bit premature.

At the moment, there are loads of footballers who in my opinion is greated than Messi. Pele, Maradona, Cruff, Beckenbauer.

Hell, I think Henry was better than Messi when he was at his best.

Problem is that with Argentina, they arent going to win the WC anytime soon...id be surprised if they get past the group stages at this yrs WC...id love to see Messi win a WC but having a crazy ex player Maradona in charge isnt going to help their cause much in all honesty.

It is hard to compare players from different generations.

Currently, when people compare Messi, C. Ronaldo & Rooney I think people forget or don't know Messi is two years younger than the other two.

Since he turned pro at 17, this is only the second season without suffering a big injury also.

George Best

Maradona was better.

As mentioned, I think to be the best player in 'history' you have to take into account their entire career, which incorporates both on AND off the field. Part of being a great football is your respect for and how you have devoted you life to the game.

I do not include drugs in this equation, so for me...I'm out.

Ermm no it shouldn't. That's pretty silly if you ask me, the best footballer in the world will be the best footballer in the world because of what he does on the pitch not off it.

How do you compare a goalie to a striker (or however you want to classify Messi) - personally think its probably easier to show flair as an attacking type player so this is where majority of awards will always go and the way Messi is going he should be one of the best ever attacking players when he retires, but no not yet.

I love Utd and I love GBest for part of that history, but I cant help thinking less of him because of what he was like off the field , even though as far as I know he had an exemplary playing career with nothing really bad to note (Im not suggesting my way of thinking is the only way - far from it, just commenting)

That's your interpretation of it, undoubtedly. His opinion, and mine as it happens, is that off the pitch matters as well.

If anybody here has watched both 90 minutes of Barca this week and last then you'd know EXACTLY what Laporta was talking about. What he's shown in the last two league games stunned me while I was watching. I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. Zidane used to be the best player I'd ever seen but Messi is very, very close to taking that title.

If any of you have a few hours spare today, you must try and watch either of the last 2 league games in full to get absolute appreciation for what Messi is doing right now. It's not normal.

He's playing Arsenal in a week. ****.

How many people here have seen his last 3 or 4 games in full? Be interesting to find out what people are basing their opinions on. Laporta is quite right in saying that over the last week or so, Messi has played maybe the best week of football the globe has ever seen

So in the last two weeks Messi has played better then players like Pele? Cruyff? Maradonna? Di Stefano? Puskas? Platini? Eusebio?

Not to mention these players kept there performances up over the length of the career, and won titles and World Cups.

I think Messi, at the moment, is untouchable in terms of the best player in the World.

Judge him at the end of his career.

No I just mean his ridiculous consistency over the last week or two have shown he has as much/more ability with a football than any human before

8 goals in a week is something amazing for Messi...last night he gets a hattrick...could have had 4 but gives Ibrahamovic the penalty...pretty nice of him to do that as Ibra needs the confidence...he missed 2 absolute sitters last night.

But saying that hes definitely on a different planet to everyone else including the precious Shrek aka Rooney:p...id be surprised if he didnt get the world player of the year award again...hes head and shoulders above everyone else and the form hes carrying now...i feel sorry for Arsenals defenders...they are going to have a hell of a time shutting him down and if they do then theres Xavi and Iniesta to provide more threats so as much as i want Arsenal to win...i just cant see it:(.

But calling him the best player in the history of football is a bit silly...i mean how far are we going back in history exactly to claim that Messi is the best??.

Messi has to keep that up over his life in football, he has to continue to be good off the pitch and win things, esp a World Cup.

He's not the best player in the history of football, based on the last few weeks.

He needs to do this all his footballing life (of which I have no doubt he can do) and he needs to win things.

Judge him at the end of his life in football, he's only early 20's.
