So how good is Messi?

Just to clarify I wasn't saying that I think that Messi is the greatest player ever, it was simply a question put forward after what Laporta said.

But calling him the best player in the history of football is a bit silly...i mean how far are we going back in history exactly to claim that Messi is the best??.

I didn't think football existed before the Premier League according to Jakeke or the chairman of that club name escapes me :D :p

I'm sorry, but how exactly does off the pitch matter? we're not talking about the 'nicest footballer ever' or the 'most noble footballer' we are talking about the the p4p loaded down with skill and effectiveness maestro of the game. whether you agree with all their going ons off the pitch surely doesn't come into it.

I hear that Alexander the Great/Julius Cesar/Napoleon/whoever had some very questionable personal habits but you won't see me recommending Nicey McDedicated of Noralovia as the greatest military leader of all time. (You won't have heard of him or the country as he wasn't actually that good in terms of tactics, grand strategy or inspiring his men so his country was swallowed up by it's many hostile neighbours early in his reign. but he was a really smashing guy).

he's good, but he has littleman syndrome going for him...

im sure if lots of kids take steroids, retain their low centre of gravity but become stronger and quicker bodily - then some of them would look pretty fantastic running at spanish defenders too.

No I just mean his ridiculous consistency over the last week or two have shown he has as much/more ability with a football than any human before

Not really as in the past Ronaldinho, Pele amongst others have shown amazing ability with the football...hell Ronaldinho still scores some pretty amazing goals but hes not as consistent as he was once was....Pele was simply sublime with the ball as well back in his day along with Maradona who again was a master of ball control.

Yes Messi is good...scratch that hes the best at the moment but until he retires and wins the WC amongst other trophies then we cannot regard him as the best in the history of football...dont get me wrong i absolutely love the way he plays...my fave player by a long shot

I don't think he's the best ever yet. But I accept that there's quite a large chance that's what he'll be regarded as in 10 years. Besides freak injuries due to his dwarf body I really can't see anything that will stop him. The frightening thing is he just keeps getting better when you don't think it's really possible

The World Cup has absolutely nothing to do with anything by the way. Especially since recently international football has got worse than club football as opposed to times in the past when it was the other way round

Exactly Dan, I don't see what off field stuff has to do with being labelled the best footballer. Look at Ronnie O'Sullivan, probably the greatest and most natural snooker player to have ever played, outside snooker come across as a bit of a weirdo. Does being a weirdo somehow dismiss his claim to being the greatest ever? No it doesn't.

I'd also like hear more about Nicey McDedicated of Noralovia, he sounds ace. :p

I think he has to keep it up for the rest of his footballing life.

I think we can sit back and judge him in 15-20 years.
He needs to win a World Cup.

Well take what Laporta says with a pinch of salt:p...he doesnt know his arse from his elbow that man.

Lol:p:D

LOL well its not he took steroids to make him better...it was needed for growth therapy when he was 12 yrs old...

Why not? :D

It's the biggest and most highly regarded trophy in World Football.

I don't think it's possible now for one player to single handedly win a world cup. :p

It's not something that needs to be on his list of achievements to be considered the best player ever. It would be nice, but it's a team game, he needs 10 good players around him.

because to be a 6ft powerhouse like Ronaldo is different to having a natural advantage (such as low size and high muscle content) for obvious reasons in football.

Ronaldo is all tricks, technique and skill + his size and physiche.

messi has the natural advantage (and disadvantage) of being shorter and at the same time, faster than his opposition - but without the lack of muscle to go with it...this makes it very difficult to deal with him for obvious reasons- such as him being able to change direction easier and simply chip it and chase it into a corner, knowing that he can out gallop the defender.

not taking anything away from the wee man - but clearly he has some artificial advantages which make it easier for him to do what he does..

It doesn't matter if he wins it on his own (ala Maradonna) or not, he has the abilty to do it imo.

It's a competition that comes around once every four years, and if you win it puts you in to a very special class of players.

It's not like any other competition in the World, no domestic cup comes close. (yes that includes the European Champions League, sorry Sky syndrome people)

Argentina have the quailty of players to win a World Cup, infact I still rate them capable of winning the one this summer. (forget all the "not playing well ****" same was said about Brasil and has being said before, the World Cup does funny things to teams)

Messi isn't Best, Best was never going to do much on an international side because of whom he played for (no disrespect), Messi is part of an amazing footballing nation who produce great teams.

Maradonna was little and took a tonne of drugs, does this make him any less of a player?

Messi is by an absolute mile the best player in the game at the moment.

I wouldn't say by an absolute mile. He is certainly the best at the moment though. As has been said previously though, lets see him do it throughout his career first.

I'd say Ronaldo (Brazilian) was better than Messi is at the moment, and were it not for injuries would have been the best player ever. Fingers crossed Messi doesn't have similar injuries and can go on to become what Ronaldo would have.

Messi is currently playing in one of the best teams in the world at the moment and is an absolute joy to watch. The one thing that not many people seem to mention is Messi's attitude, unlike a lot of players doesnt throw him self to the floor and will generally accept a refs decision.

I also have respect for Messi, because I don't see him react very often to being kicked.

He gets kicked a lot, because they often can't get the ball off him any other way (same thing happened to Pele to a frightening degree).
