By 1997 car makers had gotten over the OMG LOLS put i and injection over their cars to make them seem better.

Nothing wrong with wanting a diesel minxy.

How about an Astra CDTi 150?

Same instant shove as the Vectra, but in a smaller package?

I remember being very very suprised when I looked down at a speedo in a Vectra CDTi one day and it read 141 elephants.

No idea what the Astra is geared to, but its worth a look?

I'd say that a 1.8T powered Leon/Golf/Octavia/A3 would probably be the best bet then.

He wants a little bit of turbo hoof, but nothing too dramatic. 1.8T's are reliable and relatively frugal, and best of all, no diesel dagdag.

Spec me a car. Must have:

Wheels

Steering column

Brakes

Injection

:p

In seriousness, looking at your car history a 1.8/2.0L car would be ideal if you want thrills. If you don't want the common stuff, like a Mondeo, Focus or Fiesta, look at Japanese alternatives. These tend to be by Nissan and Honda. At your budget, I wouldn't bother looking at any of the higher marques such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi as IMO when (and not if) they do go wrong the bills will be quite high.

I think these are probably the sort of threads that makes the rest of the forum think we are all horrible in motors :p

I dont even think he needs a 1.8T, all he has driven is 1.2 litre junk. I thought my 2 litre Mondeo was a rocketship when I first got it as I'd never driven anything quicker. Why not take advantage of the fact he will, by nature of his inexperience, have much lower standards which are easily satisfied without massive cost?
