It worries me how many people in this thread didn't really know about Dresden.

To be fair is was skirted over in History class at my school in the 90's. I only knew about it because i was interested in WW2 and read all about it books my older brother had who was obsessed with WW2 and the british military when he was a teeanger

that's the standard I think.
still wouldn't call it anyone's finest hour! :o

I'm wondering what on earth they're teaching us in our schools??!

WW2 was our finest hour and now it's 'poor old Germans??' Is this some EU directive to re-write history? :p;) (This is a joke and not to be taken seriosuly, jeez!)

This.

Tough titties to Fritz for starting two world wars and losing both of them. Thanks to Bismark and Hitler there are ancestors of mine scattered across French fields and at the bottom of the Med.

Not one of our proudest moments but it is easy to criticise these things with hindsight and such actions are not always done for obvious tactical reasons but broader strategic objectives.

The targeting of enemy civilians has always been an aspect of warfare and always will. The capacity to do so has increased throughout history as has the concentration of people found in areas to actually apply force to. But subjugation of the people who are ruled and the targeting of them and their labour as a method of warfare is nothing new.

One positive thing is, I've been to Dresden and I thought me being English I may receive a negative reception from the people I met. The reality was it's one of the most friendly places I've been to and the people there are wonderful.

If the the people of Dresden no longer bear a grudge, I do wonder what the OP's problem is.

We were taught it in secondary school, O levels rather than GCSEs though. My son didn't do WWII at all in school, except for the Holocaust. Which I think is pretty bad.

so Germany started WW1?
that's new to me.

ww1 is a strange one isnt it..they sort of all went to war by accident

nobody intended it but they felt obligated somehow to do it..the major royal leaders all being related makes it all the stranger

I didn't either - this was 30 years ago - we did Industrial Revolution. It's basically up to what's chosen from the syllabus. I was interested enough to watch the whole series of The World at War when it was first broadcast though.

It is 70 years since the firebombing of Dresden, one of Britain's most infamous acts of terrorism and discriminate targeting of civilians and refugees in World War II.

The Dresden firebombing occurred in February 1945, the were no civilians in Germany in 1945. By this point Hitler had declared a status of total war, enacting martial law and mobilising all civilians into part of the war effort. After this point every target was a military target.

We did this also. And this was 30 years ago....we learned about WW1 and the Tudors as well. We touched upon The Crusades and Romans in Britain, and also the British Empire, specifically The Slave Trade. I seem to recall stuff about Greek and Byzantine empires as well.

When you’re in a fight like that you’ll do anything to reduce your opponent’s will and ability to fight back. It wasn’t pretty, but it was needed. Luckily Europe has grown up since then.

Edit: And the OP is a blatant troll.

You're wasting your knowledge and logic on a troll I'm afraid uber.
Anyways, what you doing here? Get back in the Ukraine thread!
