I, and many others, received £600 a year every January. I also received a £2,700 a year grant which I lived off

though that was from the government/SLC rather than the Uni I believe.

Not quite - Cambridge has a wide variety of bursaries for both UK and international students. They tend to be means-based - I suppose this is because they don't really need to "bribe" students to do their studies here.

PhD subsidies of course are much better, particularly in sciences/engineering. Mine is industry-sponsored and if I still lived in Sheffield I'd live like a (very busy) king. Unfortunately it's too expensive round here in comparison, so I live like a (very busy) pauper

Would have got £2000 a year for grades from Surrey, and now my uni are doing it too but a year late for me so I get nothing

7 years at uni and I have under £2000 debt.

Unfortunately I have to be ginger and wear a kilt all the time, but it's a small price to pay.

I got £1800 in my first year because of family background, didn't get any this year, and will get another £1800 this coming year.

I think that the University of Glamorgan offer a £2k bursary if your Grades are good enough.

student finance only gave me £2215 this year, loan only

compared to £5.5k (loan + grant) last year, a BKIB :/ from Uni we only get £300 if we went to the right college that is in a partnership with Uni, and they also give £700 to people that received full grant and loans from Student Finance, which I think is seriously unfair.

If this is a bragging thread, I'm getting all my course fees and costs paid, £700 per month in my back pocket and bonuses at the end of each college phase over the next three years.

But that's 'cos I'm training to do a job nowhere near enough people want to do.

I'm currently a Cadet working towards becoming an Engineering Officer in the Merchant Navy. Apparently a lot of people are put off by being away for upto 4 months at a time, but you also get the same length of time off. Being "youngish",free and single, it doesn't phase me.

In Scotland I don't pay tuition fees, I get a £2000~ bursary and £2000 loan on top of that.

Hmm wages don't seem too bad if my search is accurate

- Newly qualified engineering officers earn around £25,000 a year.
- Experienced officers earn from £26,000 to £50,000.

The time away would put me off too though :/

I am one of the students who will have to pay £9k a year and I will be doing masters so that's £36k! Does not phase me, as I know that I should get a good job with a good starting salary.
I think it will put off students who are just going for the government funded parties, for my course it is not going to make a scrap of difference to how many people are applying.

I think those figures are based around off-shore, ferry type vessels, and not deep sea. Deep sea, the wages are a fair bit higher for example. I've been talking to a guy sitting his chief's exams, and his employer, BP, have given him a letter offering him a chief's post aboard a supertanker on £125,000 p/a based on him passing his exams and getting his chief's ticket. :eek:

I always feel for poor old Sheffield - usually high up in the global rankings and then lower in the UK ones! I guess it's the amount of research that puts them higher up in global rankings.
