I meant more in terms of reliability. Seeing as your a new driver I'm guessing you don't understand the problems RX8 cars can have + potential bills. There is a reason their dirt cheap.

No really, I asked if I could take it for a fairly long test drive since I needed to show it to my g/f who couldn't get the day off work. The didn't mind and just asked me to put some fuel in it.

Since I'd left my own car with the dealers they knew I was going to be coming back. I think I might have even had to leave my keys with them.

I then got a lift back to the garage with my dad to pay for it and pick up my car.

oh I know RX8's and the problems they have very well

totally know what I'm getting into if I decide to go for rx8 rather than something else! giving my self time to make my mind up

so my license is sent off to be replaced from provisional to full uk - will take another week/two to get the real thing.. now can I legally drive around? what if I get stopped? I know that by law I've got 7 days to produce the required documents but what if it doesn't arrive in 7 days, will police be able to get to dvla to confirm the fact that I have a license?

Did you not get given a certificate to say you passed your test? You are able to drive before your license arrives as you'll have the pass certificate which if I remember rightly also has your driver's license number on it too. If you got stopped and they needed to check your details out, they'll be able to look up your license number and see that you do have a full license.

my address changed since my provisional so I had to get the certificate and send it out my self with my new address, provisional etc

so I don't currently have it..

which I assume means that I can't drive until I receive my license. :confused:

Hmm, a tricky situation that. I'd be inclined to believe that you should still be ok, as your details would check out and you have a valid reason for not having a license photocard or paperwork on you but I'd suggest giving the DVLA a call and double-checking with them first.

Indeed! I guess the chance of me getting pulled over on a 40 or so mile drive home is low but if rather not take the risk ;/

The police can do checks now to see if you are allowed to drive since everything went online.

Aha that's good to know but the question is "when" am I allowed to drive? My transition from paper certificate to plastic card is in motion right now so how do I know if I can drive... Guess its best to call dvla and ask because their online docs are bit meh!

I do have my license number and a pic of my certificate before I sent it off(not that it means much but it's for my own reference)

guess I should be alright, goal is to just pick up the car after buying and drive it home really, I will wait till I get my license to properly start using it - yes I'm bit worried haha

You can drive the car with the certificate, there's no law which states you need the plastic.

I wouldn't worry at all. As long as the car is insured and you're not driving like a tit than I highly doubt you will be pulled over by the police.

You dont even need your licence. They can get these details from you name, DOB and address....

TBH, the only real reason they would ask you to produce your licence is if they thought you gave them false details.

urgh why are insurers so painful!

the idea I had was -;

do some quotes online -> get the price -> test drive the car -> If I like it buy it/insure it on the spot and drive away..

reality is that if I run a quote to say start on friday and test drive a car on friday mid-day, the quote will be invalid! now that's all cool and dandy, just another quote? I wish it was that easy... £900 + added from the same insurer ! so the price goes from a reasonable(for a first car) 2000 to 2900 !

eh! it's a pain to get started.

Just ring them up and quote the reference number, go through the details on the phone. I'd be surprised if they still want an extra £900.

I wouldn't pay £2900 to insure a first car, seems like a complete rip off. I drew the line at paying £1200 on car insurance.

Lucky you, I paid £2,000 at 18 (Parents added, TPFT, quite high excess). Cheapest I could find anywhere and that was on a £2,200 6 year old Fiat Punto 1.2.
