So My PS3 Stopped Reading Discs, What Should I Do?

whilst i agree that it should not have broke so soon. i dont think 99.99 is a bad price for the repair. the company my girlfriend works for would charge 102.00 for it.

I'm terrified of my PS3 breaking because its Japanese and Sony are notorious for not wanting to help you in any way whatsoever if you have something in the wrong region.

i simply cant believe that playstations still suffer from laser problems. my ps1 had it and i had a laser issue with both my ps2's (original and slim)!

I wish i had known about the information Wyrdo posted, would have saved me a few bob down the years....

The 60Gbs and early 40s seem to suffer more from this than the 80s, but its far less than the PS1 or PS2 laser. I guess thats what happens with new Tech until its mass produced you always start off with a higher number of faulty units that it time decrease with improved processes.
As for TSG tried the new laser route? can be bought fairly cheaply off the bay and a few websites will sell you one for slightly more.

yes them saying 1year is all u get is rubbish as i know u can be coverd up to six years on some things that most people did not even know about.it boils down to what and how much it is in the first place say a £1000 tv should be expected to last longer than the std 1 year warrenty.

why not, it wasnt just the playstations that suffered from it - their cd players and dvd's are plagued by it as well. Their mini systems especially from experiance - i had two different models that both had laser failure.

winzor!!! This link should help you!! it did for me!!!!!

EDIT: Actually read the thread and it seems you have already tried the telephone number. I was super polite on the phone and said I lost my job and had nothing in mylife except my ps3 lol. They gave me a replacement, mine was out of warranty by 4-5 months.

o_o

doesnt the EU have a 24 month warranty on electronics?

I think that this is a really grey area. There is a line of thought (supported by 'Which?') that says you should argue the point if your product develops an unexpected fault up to 6 years after purchase!

BTW - my PS3 stopped recognizing games over the weekend. Well sometimes it doesn't load them up at all - other times it does, but the games freeze within a minute.

I might try repairing it myself. Does anyone know which is supposed to be easier - replacing the whole optical 'block', or just replacing the laser?

Thanks

I just phoned Sony who said that they don't do repairs for out-of-warranty machines - but would send me a refurb for £145.

The tech guy reckoned that doing a full system restore should sort the problem, but that sounds a bit like BS to me!

Still, nothing to lose I guess......
