So, o2 retentions?

Pretty rubbish deal, they've tied you in for 24 months with a phone that really was a bit of a disaster by all accounts.

Huh? I agree that the deal is a bit pantstastic, but aren't we talking about the Desire here? That certainly wasn't a disaster. Or have I got the wrong end of the custard pudding?

He's talking about the X10.

Which was a bit of a disaster when launched compared to the Desire, sort of.

Which as far as I know is pretty much fine now bar the lack of latest android?

Seeing as it's my first android phone I doubt I'll notice lol

For those who reckon the retentions deal was rubbish, please feel free to phone them on my behalf next time oh gurus of the mobile phone world and get a better deal...

offered me a rubbish deal on the desire. £40 per month and told me they couldn't do any better.

yeah I noticed however I found something interneting

but you have to take the full amount of the handset

you could go on the simplicty contract and keep it, its about £20 per month. you get 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb internet in total I ll check up now actually

So if you manage to optine a desire for less than £400( :p) you may well be laughing, also I worked out some phones are sort of best off on sims free first off to be fair

I m just looking at the desire on contract now, I ve seen one were the handset is £150, £30 per month on a 18 month contract, for that you get 100 minutes, unlimited texts and 500 mb internet (comes to about £690 after the contract has ended)

I'm just looking at the current deals too for the Desire.

Sadly I'm a fairly heavy (700-800mins/mo, 500sms) user, so the contracts are all in the £30+ price bracket.

I'm used to o2 600; 600 min, unlim sms, unlim o2 to o2 calls, and unlimited blackberry for £25 a month, 18 month contract.

The o2 network in Manchester seems to be falling apart half the time, so I won't feel too sorry to see them go if I'm honest.

Guy I spoke with yesterday said they aren't allowed to do the desire for less than £35 per month atm.

They have more leniency with the X10, but anything decent with 18months is still a no go really :(

Spent a lot of time searching online recently and there are a couple of 18month deals for the desire and x10 but they were around £35+ per month if you wanted a lot of minutes.

Only £25 per month deals I found online for 18months were 100mins which is no where near enough :(

Vodafone phoned me out the blue a few months ago when the Desire pretty much just came out and gave me all the loyal customer spiel. Incidently I was actually looking to get my dad a contract so after a little bit of pressing the girl said she can do a 24month contract with free phone for £30 a month with 300mins, ulnlimited text and web and discount it to £20 for the first 13months which I thought was a pretty good deal (Brings to total cost of ownership in at £590).

After getting this deal and phoning O2 to cancel they straight away came into matching the offer (but in a very odd way), I basically flat out refused because it meant I had to change tariffs at a certain point to just about match Voda's deal so they offered a slightly better deal (I forget what it was), but being the (semi :p) honourable chap I kindly said no as I already agreed to the deal with the girl at Voda :)

So deals can be done, it's all down to a mix of pot luck and how you go about it. The only real suggestion I can make is possibly try towards the end of the month when targets are closing in and the guys are trying to hit bonuses etc.

People get hung up on things like this too much. There is only 1 fact that they care about when they offer you a new contract and that's how much money are you worth to them. In some companies they just label people as either 1 2 or 3's. 1's they try to keep, 2's are OK so they give them an OK deal and 3's just get a crap deal to as they make them no money :P

If you're not worth a lot then switch networks all the time, use quidco, you'll be much better off. If you spend a lot, retensions will usually work out better.

This doesn't exist in call centres for the record, they don't have sway over the deals they offer and trying to do it this way will probably just frustrate you. On the other hand, going instore to a cpw/p4u etc.. you might have better luck.

Can anyone help me? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am with O2 as well currently on a retention deal(18month one) and I think it expires in December, is there any way I may be able to upgrade early? I have been a customer for 4 years?

Depends on monthly spend, which "priority" group do they have you in?

O2 Priority List upgrade benefits are subject to the following Terms and Conditions:
Blue and Silver customers are eligible for one month early upgrade, Gold customers are eligible for three months early upgrade, and Platinum customers are eligible for six months early upgrade

Hmm, I'm a gold customer but I suppose the upgrades department doesn't have quite the same 'clout' as the retentions department.

...and If I go to retentions, my bargaining chip has to be "i'll leave unless...", so no point in calling with more than a month or so to go!

I'd still call the retentions team tbh when you are eligible for upgrade.

Explain to them you are eligible for upgrade but can't find any decent offers in store or online and see what they can do.

I didn't threaten to leave when I rang them, I just stated I had been looking around and found better deals elsewhere and asked if they'd be able to offer me similar.

I never ring upgrades, I always go straight to retentions as upgrades only offer what's on the website.
