So the sidebar is going (windows7)

But you have 3.8Ghz i7 with 6Gb of ram, like your gonna notice it. :p

Yeah, it's not just that though. I just don't see any point in it. What, that's useful, could I put on the sidebar that doesn't have duplicated functionality elsewhere? CPU usage graphs, hard disk space, calendars - all pointless IMO :) I like me desktop scrupulously tidy :)

Fair enough.

I have network monitor so I can see transfer speeds if the thing I'm using doesn't show it and Everest sidebar gadget showing my temps so I can be sure I'm running nice and cool at all times.

Yup!

I enjoy having the sidebar :)

Ok I agree that a lot of the information can be found from different sources but I enjoy just going to the desktop to see the status of things in the sidebar.

In my sidebar I have: Clock, Slideshow, CPU/Mem usage, Network Usage

am I missing something?

I'm sitting content with 4gb here, must be time for an upgrade!;)

*Looks at measly 2GB* :(

Perfectly fine for general fiddling and Photoshop as I don't really game anymore.

I like the sidebar, generally for CPU usage and notes though. Although I can't work out what is so big about being able to put widgets anywhere on the screen in 7, I can do that in vista, I assume there is something I am mising?

To the people saying "Sidebar" is useless and they dont get it well i dont get that comment to be honest.

at worsed it displays stuff already accessable but its quicker to hand as shown in my pic.

how can any of that be useless ?

most people here have at leats 6GB.

Hardly.

I've never really used Sidebar myself. I can see the point of it, but I've never really found or seen a gadget that's been useful or clever enough to make me turn it back on. I don't fullscreen my windows (no need with current resolutions) so it'd fit nicely down the right-hand side, but unfortunately most moron users just maximise everything regardless of the size of their display, so 7's implementation will probably make more sense for those people really.

Well if you don't have a modern day amount of memory then it's unlikely you're the kind of user that could benefit from sidebar gadgets so it's like telling a sports car driver to buy a corsa...

As for gadgets not working, It only works with UAC on with earlier builds (7000 for example). Update to the latest build to get it working with UAC off...

Come on, 6GB is not "a modern day amount of memory", it's an enthusiast's amount of memory; how exactly does having 4GB or 2GB of RAM mean someone isn't going to benefit? Sidebar gadgets are there to benefit everyone, not just elitists.

Well, my desktops have always been about simplicity and style. The sidebar and the gadgets it brings creates an extra level of complexity and untidyness which I simply don't need. The clock's been a standard part of Windows since practically ever for goodness sake :D Everything that you use it for is easily accessed elsewhere, or from my dock.

I'm not saying people shouldn't use it, just that for me there's no need :)

I have a Dock also.
I'm seeing two things on my screen:
  1. usefulness
  2. tidyness

:D

Well, people are instantly assuming you need epic amounts of memory to run a sidebar just because it uses 50MB ram.

If people are being such epic nonsense speakers then I'll speak epic nonsense too and say 6GB is the norm or should be.

Sidebar users will know what they want on their sidebars and will use them regularly - like myself I have a 24" screen, I never run a window maximised so it's very useful having all this info on the side in.....a bar! when 'Shopping I can see cpu core and mem usage to monitor trends and such like, I can quickly put text snipepts into sidebar notepad or glance at the calendar for form field inputs on webpages or threads when needed and likewise empty the bin without the need to have a desktop icon for it.

End of the day a sidebar = convenience and efficiency without any system performance impact on any PC of current age.

Even my netbook runs the sidebar fine but I choose to have it off due to the screen resolution not suiting its usage much.
