So.. what do I do?

I've never been in this position before, if I've ordered new parts they've always turned up, maybe taken a week with bank holidays or delays but I've never had to wait longer than that in over 20 years, never ordered anything so highly in demand before but that's no longer the case, as behind me is every piece of my new PC except the CPU.

I have a PC to game on and technically not everything is behind me, I thought maybe if I got the new GPU in I'd be happy but it's like the upgrade itch hasn't been scratched, I even put in an extra cable from the new PSU as the cherry on top after a questionable adventure on fact finding.

Two things frustrate me here, one is that it's not like I've pre-ordered something that isn't out already and secondly, there isn't even a suitably, well priced CPU that I could use in the mean time to get it up and running and while not difficult, swapping the CPU in and out is more work than a quick graphics card swap so I'm not sure I'd even do that as it would likely be a bit of a side-grade to what I have already.

My question to you all is, how would(have) YOU cope(d) in this situation? What are my options other than wallowing in self pity and staring into the abyss.

Assume you’re waiting for a 9800x3d?

I’d probably just start eating and drinking for Christmas
Yeah correct, going from a 9900k so it's hard to not downgrade in the meantime just to use everything or I'd probably order something else and send it back/sell it second hand! I'd love to eat and drink for Christmas but that's my birthday too so I already have a reason :D

Find out where the nearest stash of them are, get floor plans, a layout, anything.

Bring guns.
Then wait in the Winchester until it all blows over?

I pre-ordered a case on the 11th of December. It was in stock the next day and it had not been despatched when I contacted the retailer to cancel my order today. I've pretty much given up with the prospect of building this year. I've been waiting to put my build together since September, when I dismantled my previous PC.

Personally I wouldn't have bought anything until the cpu was in stock but that's just me. As we have no idea when deliveries of the 9800x3d will pick up I would buy a stop gap even if it's just to test that everything is working as warranties are ticking away and once you are outside of 14 days you would have to do a full RMA on any faulty items. Even a 7600 should quite easily beat a 9900k plus you can always sell it on the MM or you could probably get what you paid for it on Ebay now there are no fee's.

Same, I just wait until its in stock before buying and all the scalpers have had there day, some with 10 in hand, hopefully AMD have more than enough to send out when the 9900X3d and 9950X3D are released, the 9800X3D was just pushed out early before it was ready really to compete with intel.

Do you mean the regular 7600?

tbh I wanted a PC upgrade so much I was happy to wait, it's made more painful that its pre-order because its out of stock though. A lesson learned but we're here, however the eta thread was updated with a potential order of 150-200 units coming in... so I guess we wait a little longer

I think whats hes saying, is order a cheap AM5 CPU so you can get it up and running to make sure everything else is working fine, even a 7600 non X which is probably one of the cheapest AM5 CPUs will beat your current 9900k, then when your 9800X3D finally turns up, you can sell the 7600 on.

Unsure when you ordered but the latest update from OCUK on the 9800X3D is below, update was posted on Weds 18/12/24

Quote below

We are expecting a delivery in next 2-3 days of 150-200 units of 9800X3D so some of you still waiting will have one for Christmas. :)

I am also been informed the UK is expecting several thousand in January, as such we hope to clear all back orders by then and have stock, but again we suspect it won't last long.

I pre ordered my 9800X3D on the 30/11/24 and currently still waiting

And Also the stock update from the 9800X3D product page

Stock Update: We cannot guarantee orders placed after 12:00 28th November before Christmas. Orders placed now are expected mid-late January 2025.

I've read your post several times now, and I still don't really understand it,
oh, wait no, on the umpteenth time reading it, I think that I've got the jist, I think that I would recognise the situation and just wait, but grab a cheaper am5 cpu to tide me over, unless I was totally skint, then I'd just wait it out
bit daft buying the one cpu that everyone wants, but which there is very limited stock. though.

I hurt my back a while ago so there is also that I want it to be as much a one and done as possible. I've also tried to be conservative with the parts I've bought, I think I also wanna see the massive jump up without a step in between, I thought about doing the same with the GPU but I couldn't just let it sit there.

I think I'm going to just have to wallow in self pity

When are these expected to be released??

I’m afraid is not just about CPUs. Fans, AIOs, Cases…
Sometimes you want a Fractal North XL and no one in the UK have it in stock. D30s and T30s fans sometimes disappear.
I don’t blame you for start buying before everything is available, because is almost impossible to get all things in stock.
Only advice is to get the cheapest CPU and try to test everything, then sell it later.

I was looking at building a new system and so many items are on pre order.

out of all the parts the processor, motherboard and case where all on pre order. The ram and PSU where in stock.

I did a different order for each item on pre order so 1 did not hold up the other, after waiting 3 weeks for the case I decided to cancel it and got another which I had to get from else where as OCUK had no stock of that as well.
