I think so, any Nvidea GPU before the 8800 couldn't afaik. Where as ATI have been able to do both for a while.
Surely it's a more customized chip in the PS3 though, specifically made for every aspect of a consoles needs?

It would explain the shoddy visuals or performance in a lot of games. I guess they are gonna have to trade HDR for bloom effects to keep AA in the future, which is only possible on first party titles.

Yeah, I'm sure we will, the console is still in its infancy. Sony are definitely finding it a lot harder than before though and had MS not had that repair bill they would be very smug right now.

The one thing that worries me are the reports of the PS3 being unable to do FSAA and HDR at the same time, is this true?

Well of sorts, the RSX can't do it, but many have said for a while it is better to offload a lot of the work onto the cell and do the post processing using the RSX as that is a chip which is very good at post processing.

So the PS3 can do it, it is just how to do it.

The PS3's RSX is a modified 7800, and the 360's chip is built from ground up for the 360, also forming the basis for the 2900's design. Also worth iterating that the Nvidia RSX is considered a last-minute decision made by Sony, as the chip was designed very late into the PS3's development - Sony wanted the Cell to do both CPU and GPU purposes, but couldn't.

I must iterate however, that FSAA can be done on the RSX and HDR can be done on the Cell, just for fairness :) It's a bitch to program for though.

Ah, that's good to know. Unfortunately it seems Sony are totally oblivious when it comes to making life easier for the programmers (as an Artist I do find it hilarious though) by making the most complex console to code for, for the 3rd time in a row.

Thankfully it's been proven with the PSone and PS2 that quality games will come irregardless of complications, it's just all a matter of time. It took 18-24 months on the PS2 imo (Ico) for the real quality, I'm thinking roughly the same again.

The thing with it being hard to program for is it by design or by accident that it works out quite well? It means that during the life of the console, such as the PS2, the games get progressively better and better. Look at launch titles through to MGS2 to GoW2. But if you make it to easy to program for, are we blown away to early? a la gears of war?
I dont think it was deliberate, but it does come in handy after a year or 2, even if it does kinda suck right now.

you say that, but it was the same for the xbox. Look at the huge difference between halo and halo 2. Im sure the same will be true for the 360.

Many think Halo is still the best game on the xbox and the best looking. I think Halo set the bar way to high on the xbox tbh. It looked great, but there wasn't that much of a jump to Halo 2 imo. If anything Halo was a lot nicer as it didn't suffer from some of the issues Halo 2 did like some chronic pop in etc

Not at all, it's always possible to get something extra out over time, this is the case for the Xbox360. CliffyB already said it's possible to get more out of the Xbox360.
It's always better for a manufacturer to offer an easier system to work with from the start rather than something complex, as a result we have seen a rather solid stream of good and very good games on the Xbox360 where as the Playstation3 is in the dumps at the moment relying solely on ports (something other consoles did against the Playstations originality).

The difference is, this time manufacturers can do everything they want on the Xbox360, they don't need to wait for the PS3 to catch up. The Xbox360 has a large install base, a good size of the market and all the power required to make their visions a reality. That's the difference in the market this time. Developers aren't needing Sony.

I don't know many who say it's the best looking, I know plenty who think it's the best (and that's arguably true). Games such as RalliSport Challenge 2, Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden and Chronicles of Riddick for example were all graphically superior by a long way.

I am confused by your first sentence lol

I don't know many who say it's the best looking [game on the Xbox], but I know many who say it's the best [game on the xbox].

There's a difference between been a good looking game and being a good game :p. Key work in that is 'looking' :)

guys can anyone give a simple answer

I have the 360 plus the PS3 and would like to pre order

GTA IV

Assassins Creed

which console should I pre order them on what do you think

well the normal answer is go with whichever controller you like best, however id definitely say 360 for GTA 4, because of the exclusive content. For assassins creed deside whoch controller you like best for 3rd person action/adventure titles and go with that.

I'd say GTA4 on Xbox360 purely because of the additional content, plus it's easier to play online with people on your friends list.

Assassins Creed would be on whatever controller you like best I guess, or whether you like achievements. Though if it's tied into Home then I would guess that wouldn't matter so much.

You just spent ages arguing the technical merits of the PS3, then went on to say this ?

I didn't really spend ages talking about the graphical capaibilites of the PS3, infact i barely mentioned it
