I recall playing Elite for months and months when I was younger... What space faring games have captured that magic (for you)?

Freespace 2 is the best space sim I've played, although it isn't as open-ended as Elite. For combat, controls and storyline it is untouchable.

If you want something closer to Elite (trading/exploration) then I thought Freelancer and DarkStar One were both decent clones.

Haven't tried X3 but I'd imagine some people will recommend that.

X3, but man the learning curve is huge! but fun to play and the graphics if you have a good PC, fandabydosey.....

X2 and x3

what's the mods for x3 might have to install it again.

patch to the laitest version 2.02 and install the bonus pack then the xtended mod(XTM)

Just what does XTM give you? Well...

- an incredible 90 new universe sectors, including the Terran Solar System and new race sectors
- over 90 new ships from all races, including the M0 and a selection of ships remodelled and brought back from X2
- new in-game effects, from weapons to soundtracks to planets
- new commands, new stations, new wares and commodities, even new ship types.

i really want to install x3 again but the controls were just too complicated. second mouse button bringing up some sort of command menu and its just too much really.
if only they put in a half assed tutorial it would have eased the learning.

mouse you dont need a mouse, all you need is a joystick and keyboard. The menu can be accessed by pressing enter and using the arrow keys.

Yes the interface takes a bit of learning but its not that hard, just learn a few shot cut keys and you are away.

u ...... enable auto pilot - this will follow the selected ship or dock you at the selected station.
j ...... seti , speed the game up for those long trips.
. ...... sector map
, ...... uni map
r ...... owned property list
t ...... target object
o ...... open cargo bay
m ...... m select missile type
L ...... fire missile
i ...... target information / menu
ctl-c ...... command menu for setting commands on your ship
esc ...... leave menu

remeber all keys can be remaped, and all menus can be controled by the arrow keys and enter button.

NONE.......:(

everything else that followed is pale imitations and cant do some of the things that the Elite series did. (admittedly I-War 2 captured a little of the feeling and the flying)

Have to agree, although a great deal of Elite's magic was that it was pretty much a new concept, a little like when the original Tomb Raider came out.

Playing Elite now makes you realise just how basic it was (like most games were back then) and the fact that modern games are so much deeper even if they never feel it.

Thats just opinion, its true x3 doesnt do things LIKE elite did that because its not elite.

X3 does lots of thing elite didnt do, by your logic that makes it better than elite.
