So what space faring games capture the magic of Elite?

I still fail to see why elite is so much "better" than x3, just because it was the first doesnt make it the best. Is Wolvenstine better than FEAR, is DUNE better than supreme commander.

It was the first and as such will always be highly regarded but it doesnt make it the best ever of its genre.

do you remember the 1st time you had sex? name, place etc how about the times after that? :D

i suppose nostalgia adds at least 96% to my score of it :D
Same with Dune 2. Havent played an RTS since which captures the same feeling.

Frontier: Elite 2 was fantastic and remains one of my fondest PC memories. I always thought it knocked the original for six too, and at least you got a docking computer to start with this time around :D

It was also one of the first games (, after Civilisation) I'd ever seen with an intro movie at the start. For a recently ex-8bit computer owner, that was a revelation. :o

What is the premise of X3?

I like space 'sims' and recently download, via steam, Nexus the Jupiter Incident but quite fancy and Elite-esk game such as the above.

However I fear a joystick is required to get the most out of X3, am I correct?

Nexus is a very interesting game, and seems to be one of those 'might have been' buried gems that litter PC gaming history. With a bit of polish, and some work of mission design and difficulty settings, it might have given Homeworld a run for its money.

I still play Elite again, since I discovered Amiga Emulation, the game still as good as ever, only downside is it doesnt entertain my Sidewinder joystick. But I dont mind the keyboard again :D

I wish he do elite 4 then maybe do a MMO

NAh he should cancel elite 4.

Do a game plan, def MMO. Gte the backing and fincial report then make it. Not drag it out ofver a decade.

I doubt it will see the light of day, as there's no structure. By the time it's developed it'll be rubbish graphics and wont work on the next version of windows.

Remember Elite 2 - Frontier... It was utterly amazing (for its day) but totally unplayable?

Think you're confusing it with First Encounters, Frontier was far better then Elite in my opinion but FE was bug ridden.

yeh, first encounters Every time I brought a new ship it would crash. So that ruined that game. there's only so much you can do with your starting ship.

One of my strongest/ fondest gaming memories came from Frontier - Taking off from a planet and having silly amounts of police in hot pursuit with laser beams all around. Absolutely intense every single time!

I can't understand why no space sims since since have implemented planets in the same way. It adds so much to the atmosphere when the planets you fly past are actually inhabited AND you can fly right down and land on them or just enjoy the scenery.

It's really crap how in modern space sims planets are just there to look pretty and add bugger all to the game.

(I also preferred Frontier to Elite though both were epic!)

Frontier had realistic vector flight though didn't it? So all combat just become high speed jousting? ie: The two ships fly towards each other, fire at each other as they pass, then turn around and slow down..... slowly... then pick up speed towards each other again.... slowly... and then repeat... over and over...

Too true, I just hope Infinity actually sees the light of day.

Elite was better than X3 in that it felt big. With the gates X3 doesn't feel like a massive universe but just a few boxes. Frontier with X3's graphics, building complexs and multiple ships would be perfect.

Haha! i remember that. Endless dogfighting at extreme long range. By eck that was hard. Only time got close enough was when i rammed them deliberately.

I think Frontier was the one with the extremely dodgy autopilot that crashed your ship into planets as well heh.
