So what space faring games capture the magic of Elite?

NONE.......:(

everything else that followed is pale imitations and cant do some of the things that the Elite series did. (admittedly I-War 2 captured a little of the feeling and the flying)

Agreed - X3 is overwrought pap when compared. The only game that game close was the first of the Frontier series games - Fronter Elite 2.

so what makes elite so much better?

Thing x3 has that elite didnt - i might be wrong on some of these, i havnt realy played elite.

1) dynamic economy.
2) factory owning
3) ability to own more than 1 ship
4) lots of life in the universe, and lots of ships moving around all with a perpose
5) i would say better graphics but thats a understatement
6) real scale enviroment and ships \ stations
7) larger varity of goods avaliable to trade
8) more player ownable ships \ type of ships

probably lots more that i cant think of atm.

i can only think of 2 things in elite that arnt FULLY implemented in x3
1) landing on plannets, well who want to go to a smelly plannet when you can live in space.
2) newtonian physics flight engine

wasnt in ELITE, not on the BBC anyway.

X3 is better, although ELITE started it, doesnt mean its the best.

For a stand alone game get X3.

If you like multiplayer and can pay monthly get EVE ONLINE.

simple as that :)

Neither of those were implemented in Elite.

I recall playing Elite for months and months when I was younger... What space faring games have captured that magic (for you)?

sadly Elite was one of a kind and will forever be the space game ...

x3 is amazing graphically and has tons and tons of playability but none of the 'elite' magic although it does a great job , avoid darkstar one as in all honesty its pants

HardWar mentioned above was actually a cracking game , i still have that gathering dust somewhere

Nobody actually said they were. Were in Frontier though. Some mysterious powers Braben has when he can do things no one else has done for years and has yet to do even with all the uber quad core systems these days.

What id like to see in Elite 4 is when landing on planets you can get out of the ship first person view style. So theres 2 sides of the game. The simulation and the first person adventure. You could go on both land(including space stations) and space missions.

Just one of many things :)

I remember playing the demo of HardWar and it seemed a bit limited, almost like a cross between a flightsim and a spacesim. Is the full game any better?

Might be worth checking out I-War2 and Starlancer if you don't play using the mouse, both are quite highly regarded.

Shadez did  .

I don't think Elite 4 will ever see the light of day :( . Last I heard Braben was talking about making it a MMO.

ahh he mustve been thinking of Frontier, sorry. I hope it doesnt become a MMO. I think its supposed to have both SP and MP options. Its one of those games which will probably be stuck in development hell for a while unfortunately.

I still fail to see why elite is so much "better" than x3, just because it was the first doesnt make it the best. Is Wolvenstine better than FEAR, is DUNE better than supreme commander.

It was the first and as such will always be highly regarded but it doesnt make it the best ever of its genre.

What is the premise of X3?

I like space 'sims' and recently download, via steam, Nexus the Jupiter Incident but quite fancy and Elite-esk game such as the above.

However I fear a joystick is required to get the most out of X3, am I correct?
