My GFs laptop broke so I let her borrow my EEE PC and I don't use Firewalls or Anti virus software because I know when I have a virus and I can get rid of it myself and they slow down the EEE PC.

Anyways her step dad installed AVG and Zonealarm on my laptop after giving it access to his wifi modem.

Now is that necessary I thought viruses can't pass through Wifi and isn't the modems hardware firewall enough?

If you believe this then you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

Yeah mate and how many viruses have you had in the last 2 years? I have had NONE and never use anti viruses or firewalls. Even now you can use online virus scanners.

God he put noscript plugin on in firefox too, uuugh i feel violated.

A virus, worm, trojan etc wouldn't be very good if a user can pick it up on his own would it now?

You claim to have had none, but that's not the ones you haven't found buddy.

Now is that necessary

It would be necessary whatever, not using antivirus/firewalls especially when you can get perfectly good ones for free is truly absurd.

Say hello to the Mad Hatter for me, you obviously spend the majority of your time in Wonderland.

Noob, Avira would have done a better job than either of those two!

More seriously, do two AV programs interfere with each other in any way? I would have thought it could have caused some problems.

And to the OP; what harm can one AV program do? If you are a sensible internet user then I agree you will be much less prone to malicious code, but somethings can slip past even the best of us.

Edit:

If you believe this then you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

Have fun watching the Comic Relief Dragons Den did we? :p

doesn't compute.
yeah maybe you have been lucky and haven't encountered any, but, there could be anything lurking in your system.
By the sounds of things, sure you may be able to get rid of one or two minor virus's but I doubt you can shift yourself of some of the more severe.

I know what I'm running on my PC I check my processes and services and I know if something is up. I tend to get more viruses using an AV and they slow you down. If I was still using IE then yeah I'd be screwed lol but Firefox is really secure.
Also AVG and Zonelarm on a netbook? No thanks.

SimonTW - I dunno, I never really get any viruses and if I did I would just do it manually or format if they are severe. Her step dad works for IBM and thinks he knows everything bout computers so your Avira comment made me laugh (no sarcasm)

Or he's just paranoid and treats my gf like she's a kid using a grown up toy (she's like 21 and has internet time limits ffs) she couldn't even go on youtube because of the noscript plugin.

Well, it seems hes a bit over paranoid, but it also seems you dont have your facts quite right about virus's and antivirus's.

antivirus's do NOT make you get more virus's (maybe the plurals virii i dont know)

Also you say you get more virus using an AV then you say you never really get them. WTF!!!!

AV can make you get more viruses because if there wasn't any viruses they wouldn't make money (maybe a bit farfetched) and i said i used to use them and i got viruses out of nowhere but since i stopped my pc has been clean.

if you know what your doing then AVs are so 2006 you don't need them anymore for home use. not if your an expereinced user and don't mind formatting.

and even if you do use them fair play but come on AVG AND Zonelarm on an asus eee pc??

Why don't you just use an AV like every other normal PC user and stop reformatting your PC so often fool?

Everyone here in this thread already thinks you're a retard...

Not having any protection on your system is foolish in my opinion. Security is about taking a defence in depth approach meaning having multiple layers of defences and not simply relying on one primary strategy to try and avoid your system being compromised. As with anyone else that doesn't have any protection on their system, they use common sense as a line of defence. People who run as an administrator, have no anti-virus solution and aren't running a firewall haven't got much common sense in my opinion.

Take zero-day vulnerabilities for example. It doesn't matter how much knowledge of computers you have, you have absolutely no control over vulnerabilities in software, unknown vulnerabilities in software.

If I was still using IE then yeah I'd be screwed lol but Firefox is really secure.

Have you got any evidence to back-up when you say that Mozilla Firefox is securer than Internet Explorer 7 / 8? - (Which I am guessing is what you are implying?) Every browser is open to attacks and Internet Explorer is no different and yet people still advocate that it is one of the most insecure browsers ever created.

There should be a test before you are allowed access to the internet.

Or simply a "Are you this person?" yes/no with a picture of Nate Silvers.

What has that got to do with this thread? If your implying I make things up then you didn't read the whole threads.

I know when I have a virus because I don't rely on some hogging AV to do it for me, I monitor my pc myself I know exactly what comes in and out of it.
I don't have evidence that IE is more secure than FF but I just have personal experience and I know at one point FF was a lot better than IE. Besides I know some may need an AV but I think I don't.

Formatting is fun and K1LLSW1TCH actually sounds like some crappy band that only made 1 or 2 good songs haha
