why would anyone want to drink booze with gold flakes in it?

yeah i know it tastes good, but how does gold add anything to that? surely you'd be better off filtering the gold out before you drink it? :/

You mean goldschlager? They're not flakes of metal/gold anymore though they used to be. iirc the idea is that the metal cuts the inside of your throat on the way down and allows the alcohol to directly enter your blood stream, thus getting you drunk quicker.

edit - it seems they merely reduced the amount of gold in each bottle due to people having allergic reactions. Source - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldschlager

Goldschläger is a Swiss cinnamon schnapps (43.5% alcohol by volume), a clear liqueur with very thin yet visible flakes of gold floating in it. The actual amount of gold is extremely small and serves as a sort of novelty: There is currently less than a tenth of a gram (0.1 g) of gold flakes in a 750 mL bottle of Goldschläger, which as of February 5, 2007, amounts to about 2.10 USD on the international gold market. Goldschläger is a product of Italy and imported by Paddington LTD. of Stamford, CT. A similar alcholic beverage that contains gold is Gold Strike.

A few years after its introduction, Goldschläger was reformulated to contain less gold due to some alleged accounts of individuals suffering allergic reactions.[1] The human body is not able to digest precious metals.

I remember my first outing with goldschlager....I was told the ccutting your throat nonsense....laughed...and went shot mad on it. I do love the taste of this stuff, and its now a regular on a night out.

As for the cutting your throat, it sounds a lot more harsh than it actually is if you havent tried it. You cant feel anything cutting your throat, its just like a normal shot. But after many experiments, we have come to the conclusion that it does cut your throat, if only a little bit to allow a quicker route to the bloodstream...It does get you drunk quicker, maybe not a lot...but we normally slide 4 into our night, and the effect is definately quicker than 4 shots of anything else.

As for the gold bits, they definately aren't gold...again many an experimentation. Bit they are definately solid, so if hitting your throat will definately produce a slight slice.

The thing that always comes to mind with Goldschalager...Ordering about 12 shots up here for our group with a new barman...pours one shot, then wonders out back and comes back with some coffee filter paper and procedes to attempt to filter out all the gold under the counter thinking there is something odd with it lol

That's not why, he gathers them to sell to a jeweller!

Sharp metal filings must hurt when peeing though...
