Hello,

I watched the lord Of the Rings movies ages ago and there was always a question I wanted to ask (as i seen it again last night on ch.4 it reminded me)

Why did Frodo get on the boat at the end and where is he going?

he went to the undying lands.

see this map:
undying-lands.jpg

on the right is middle earth, on the left is the undying lands. the small island in the middle was eaten by a giant turtle. (seriously)

Frodo and Bilbo were allowed to sail to the Undying Lands due to the burdens they'd carried and that they'd never be wholly cured in Middle Earth. They're viewed as somewhat of a paradise.

LOL!

Edit: How many years before is that map set up from our world now?

Was it not because he got stabbed by the Witch King and would become an "empty vessel" if he remained in Middle Earth?

Its because he was dying and wouldnt die in the undying land ever.

Yes he would. Mortals remain mortal in the undying lands. Even the firstborns aren't actually immortal IIRC.

Never read the books, only seen the films and thought they were all brilliant. How much from the books is missing on screen?

It seems to be attached at the top. Why were the elves so desperate to get the "last" boat if they could just walk around?

Actually why were the elves so desperate to get to the undying lands anyway?

Lots and lots and lots. Read the books, they're absolutely fantastic :)

I'm so glad I read them before I saw the films. Part of it is that it's nostalgic to reread them, since I first read them in primary school, and part of it is that I have my own ideas of the characters and so Frodo isn't ruined by the quite frankly gash Elijah Wood.

Nah, the Undying Lands can only be reached by sailing to them. They were taken from the world when the last king of Númenor attacked them in search of immortality. Sauron talked him into that.

The books have a lot more material than the film (no-one would sit through hundreds of hours of film), but also a lot of unneccessary junk (ie 6 pages of elfish song in a made up language - adds nothing, and you just read random sounds).
