So... which MMO are you looking most forward to?

The next MMORPG I play:

Whichever one doesn't use levels and instead forces you to actually use a skill to increase your proficiency in it.

I'm so fed up of playing an MMORPG where you "level up" by smashing the same thing over the head over and over again.
Then, once you level up you can magically increase your proficiency in a totally unrelated skill to what you've been using!

UO2 - Oh how I'd love it so...

So basically you want to "level up" skills rather than "level up" a character to learn skills.

The only way to "level up" a skill is by smashing the same skill over and over again.

(Am I the only one seeing the flaw in the logic here ?)

I'm not arguing on the UO, fact I really loved that game. But I just dont see how there is a huge difference in the leveling process be it "leveling" skills or "leveling" a character.

You're certainly right that its all levelling. Be it skills or levels.

Can kind of see what he is saying though, with the skills its a case that if I concentrate on using axes, I will become good with axes and get better through continued use of axes. If I want to then swap to using a sword, regardless of how "high" my character is I am poor with swords and have to learn to wield one effectively.

Whereas in the level based format, when I turn level 43, I can automatically use every level 43 weapon to the same effect, even if I havent even held a sword since the day I was "born".

Could be wrong though, but I am assuming thats partly what he means. You're right that its all much of a muchness in terms of levelling processes, I think its more a question of implementation and design than process.

One big difference is that people actually know how to use the skills they have, as opposed to getting them handed to them upon levelling. So if you invite someone into your party with really good tracking or healing skills, you know it's because they're got a lot of experience with using them.

I think it's more realistic than picking a skill from a list too, and means you have to make a bit of an effort to get your character where you want them.

Takes a lot of thought to implement a skill based system without opening it up to grinding and macroing though.

Mortal Online, in the hope for a UO2. Also will probably check out the new Star Wars one as, due to UO, I completely missed out on SWG and feel like I missed something out.

I'm thinking exactly the same thing. Mortal Online looks like it should be promising and at least provide some actual thrill and sense of danger in a MMO again (which I've not experienced since EVE / UO).

Seem to be some promising MMOs coming out, which can hopefully produce some new competition for the WOW dominance :)

Theres:
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Star Trek Online
Champions Online
DC Universe Online
Aion
The Agency
etc etc

Personally, i cannot wait for the star wars/trek games, should be great.

Won't be out for a whiiiiiiiile!

This is more or less what I mean.
If I decide the sword is my weapon of choice then off I go with my sword.
As I use it I get more skillful with it.
I can start using better swords.
I can learn new techniques with my swords.
My "skill" with a sword becomes better and better until I'm as good as can be.

"Traditionally" in most MMORPG's, although it is the sword I'm using, come level up time I find I'm just as skilled in Axe, staff, mace, etc.
My character has never lifted an axe in his life, yet through using a sword (a different skill set) he is just as good with the axe.

Then there are trade skills - again, anything UO related.
As a once GM Blacksmith, I can tell you it was a hard job getting there.
You had to make things of pregressive difficulty to gain skill.
I don't want to be able to make the same, easy things and keep on gaining skill.
I could make 1000 daggers - doesn't mean I can then suddenly make a full suit of plate armour!

Basically I just want UO2 :)

I am looking at Champions Online at the moment, could be fun. From what I can see they are going a more skill/power based rather than class based route. I hope they have learnted from CoH's lack of popularity and lasting power though

It's not necessarily a proper MMO but Huxley is one title I am hoping to fill the void left by the virtual death of Planetside. I vastly prefer MMOFPSs to other titles simply because there's more interaction than taking turns to whack at each other's genitals with pixelated swords until they fall over. Admittedly Webzen will probably murder Huxley, but the possibility for a great game is there.

first 4/5 there, in that order aswell probably, though in reality Star Trek might be reaching a touch far with it being seemingly based on ships a lot and, well, had a dodgey few years of will it/won't it and changing ownership and what not.

Star Wars, being who its from you think should be good and will probably be the biggest/last the longest but worried it might be hard to live up to expectations.

Champions online I assume will be decent as, well, its not too far from a update re-release of City of Heroes and looks to be following the same formula but expanding, updating and looking way better.
