So who else has done it before?

Filled up a works van without a fuel card before. They just let me drive back and get it though, and have mocked me for it since. :(

Never forgot my wallet but had my card rejected and didn't have any other cards or cash on me. The manager there was friendly enough and said I could fill out a form to pay later, but I said I'll just try the cash machine outside first just incase I could get money out there, strangely it let me take money out of the cash machine so was able to pay for it.

Some can take payment over the phone if you can ring someone. Otherwise I would imagine you leave driving license or something else to collect later.

Had to do this when Santanders Card Authorisation system went down.

Couldn't use the cash machine as it said "unable to contact your bank" and the C&P machines in Sainsburys Petrol Station just said Refused.

Left me severely confused for a while as i knew i had the money. Fortunately there were one or two other customers who had the same issue. THey just took photocopies of our driving licenses and said to pay at any sainsburys within 7 days.

If you were to just leave the station against their will and then come back and pay, would you have committed an offence?

Law seems to say:I would offer that if you leave with intent to collect the means to pay, so you aren't acting dishonestly and you do not have intent to avoid payment, you aren't guilty of an offence.

Without giving what anyone would suggest was legal advice, I would do this:

Give my details to the cashier at the kiosk. This would be my name, address and contact number, I may even show this is correct by letting them take a copy of my DL.

I would tell the cashier that I was going to go home and come straight back with a means of payment. I would take my car (regardless of what they wanted me to do with my car), drive home, come back and pay.

If I did this I would have committed no offences.

Haven't done what's in the OP but I hate it when I fill up with a certain amount of fuel i.e. £40. I try so carefully to make it land on £40, however, it lands on £40.01. FFFFFUUUUUUUUU.

One of my uni friends has a good game with this. His current game works as follows...

Have 2 x £20 notes. Fill with £20 and go a "little" over. Say £20.01

Offer to pay with the 2 x £20. More often than not, they'll let you off.

He's currently got up to £20.36 and got away with it. :p 36p worth of "free fuel"
I keep reminding him that he's the reason why fuel prices are so damn high!

I hope one day someone turns around to him and gives him the 19.99 back in pennies and other small coins with the line "have no notes sorry" :p
