So who remembers populous

Next time he'd grow trees I'd lower the ground to get rid of them... and he'd stick a damn whirlpool in it!.

What I used to like doing was placing tornados just off the cost near enemy settlements or inside a lake, which would then either stay over the water spawning a lot of whirlpools, or cut inland over their settlements/people :)

Of the heros my favourite was probably adonis, the one that splits in two after every fight, allowing you to quickly take out a large number of settlements.

Oh and plague wa another great one. I can still hear the sqark of the vultures above their heads now. Infect someone and send them into the enemy heartland :)

I so wish there was a modern equivalent. None of the recent Pop games have come close in terms of ease of use and gameplay.

Inspired by this thread I loaded up Populous on the Megadrive and really enjoyed it even though it's so simple compared to the god games now.

Does anyone know if there are any versions of this that would run in a desktop window and allow control via mouse? I was thinking that there may be a fan rewrite version floating about somewhere like you find with a lot of other retro games.
