So windows 9?

If it's free as a one-off to adopt users not convinced by Windows 8, then that's fine, but I'd worry if it's free long-term, as it means they'll be making money in other ways - adverts?

It's only a matter of time before Windows becomes subscription based for consumers.

I hope not(advert wise),they could do a limited free period for first few months, gives everybody a chance to jump on the bandwagon.

I still expect to pay, but as they say "not over until the fat lady sings".

i don't see a problem if it's a free upgrade/update only for win8/8.1 users. and those users using previous OS such has win7 has to pay maybe £15 or £25.

They take a percentage from apps. And of course for business use it wouldn't be free. I'm not convinced it will be free. But they do need to lower costs for home use.

Subscription based imo isnt a bad idea.

Id happily pay a tenner a month for full access to office and windows for use on my pc, spare laptop and tablet / phone

if/when subscription based happens my guess it'll be per device or a family subscription at a higher price which allows maybe up to 4 devices.

either way i don't like the subscription based idea.

Not sure why that would kill gaming. Please explain.

I think a lot of game developers and gamers would go over to Linux if Windows became sub based OS.

Sales would decline in general I think for PC gaming.

Most gamers including myself just want to game and not worry over regular subs for OS.

I guess you could argue how often the sub will be ie monthly, every six months, a year etc?

Why would any one want to sub, when win8 coated £25 for best part of 3 years.
A sub would be way more expensive and there is no way they'll go that route anyway for home use(they might for small businesses). They're trying to make it more accessible, not less.

Far more likely to be free/extremely free for home use. If you use it for work then maybe a subscription service to extend the license to cover that.

Exactly,I rather pay for an OS that offers years not months,if I want months I can pick up a free updated Linux distro, even with Linux I use LTS versions ie long term support.

Guys, given that most people 'buy' Windows invisibly (for consumers) when they buy a PC I don't think MS really has the option of subscriptions for all. Making the cost of Windows visible to end users would be suicidal. Look at it this way - they can sub you office (you get a trial with most PCs now), get money from the store, do 'Windows with Bing' and move to a faster update model with smaller lump sum costs versus subscription for Windows. For the consumer market they're an array of better options which are easier to sell people on.

installing windows 7 to upgrade to windows 8 so i can download the 8.1 pack and then upgrade to windows 9 every time i format is gonna SUCK! :P

I had to upgrade a new laptop from 8 to 8.1. That alone took 8 hours. At first there was 100+ updates but none would download. Eventually fixed it but it was a slow process. You need patches to get 8.1 which in itself is a 4GB download. Then patch 8.1.
I forgot how much better 8.1 is over 8.
