So, with seven races to go and the title all to play for..

Totally agree on all points, I really don't see the fuss over the massa switch. Massa is not in it this year. Yes this was his best performance for a long while but Alonso would have passed him anyway. Why eat tyres trying to do it? I'd fully expect and support them doing it at Mclaren as well.

On the subject of Button though, I believe that when he is effectively out of the champsionship then he will help out Hamilton. It would be pointless for him to hold Hamilton up or not swap places with him etc, especially as he would be in trouble with the team.

The trouble is Button and Mclaren will use mathematically instead of realistically. I'd now simply say to Button unless he ups his saturday they have to back Lewis.

Another thing I found laughable was Ron justifying winning one constructors in 20 years with "we just car about race wins and winning". Typical classic ronspeak :D

I would like to see Vettel take it as I am a fan of him and RBR, however I'm really not sure. I have a feeling that it will either be Alonso or Hamilton.

Either way these next 7 races are shaping up to be superb and hopefully a close call all the way to the end!

Meh, Alonso I feel has been a tad over rated this year, there is very few races he has gone out and won, with a nailed on pole and a nailed on unrivaled race win. Valencia took Vettel miles ahead, a safety car and his car blowing, Hamilton having his pit stop blown, etc, etc. A second behind Maldonado from second on the grid after Hamilton's team left a lap of fuel out of the car which wouldn't have made the blindest bit of difference to pole. Don't get me wrong, he's a fantastic driver and he's pulled off some of the best overtakes this year, but quite a few of them I feel are because he is further down than he should be in the first couple laps, which always makes it easier. Ferrari qualifying badly can help make them look really good in the first lap, the Ferrari or their drivers are also excellent at starts.

he's been good but more than anything the car has been solid in every race, and he's capitalised on every Mclaren/RedBull screw up.

My gut feeling is that most teams have a bad spell in the season, Ferrari will likely have a blown engine or two, or another crash, they've been lucky all season and it rarely holds. Mclaren have dominated weekends, Red Bull have dominated weekends, Lotus have looked close, Ferrari have barely done that at all this season. To this point of the season I don't think the Ferrari has had a car capable of beating the Mclaren at more than a couple races, if that. If neither team has a mistake or a reliability problem I think the Mclaren is better and is capable of significantly more poles/wins than the Ferrari.

If Ferrari's luck/reliability holds and Mclaren/Red Bull continue as most of the season Alonso has a great shot, if Mclaren have most of their bad luck behind them, I think Hamilton has a great shot.

Button, no chance, he doesn't need 78 points on Alonso over 7 races, he needs 78 points over alonso, 40 more points than several other drives, 30 more than the others. One guy not finishing in the top 3 barely at all for the rest of the season is very possible, all 5 of the drivers ahead of him being terrible simply won't happen. If Alonso doesn't finish top 5 for 7 races, then its likely one of the guys way ahead of Button will get significantly more points from Alonso doing badly. He needs to outscore 5 guys significantly not just 1.

Alonso/Hamilton are the safe bets for the main contenders but Kimi... he's due a win or two, he's still an excellent driver, he's right up there in consistency.

I'm happy with Hamilton or Alonso as for me they are the two best drivers, probably by a fairly big margin, and the two most exciting drivers. FAR better than having a champion who simply has BY MILES the best car as has been the case for several years now.

Alonso has a car that on a bad day will be in the top 5 (with an automatic gift from Massa on the rare day when quali works for the Brazilian and doesnt for FA) and on a good day will challange for the win

I cant see anyone knocking enough points off his lead to challange that - unless McLaren can challange for the pole / win in all remaining races

(Red Bull are going backwards, and need a huge upgrade to get their quali mojo back, Sauber / Lotus / Williams can do well on Saturdays but so far havent proven to me they are actually capable of actually winning a dry race)

I feel its gonna be Alonso for WDC, i think he is too far in front, its gonna end up close, very close, possibly single figures?
don't get me wrong i know McLaren have been pretty dominant over the past few races but i just don't see this lasting, McLaren have been making too many mistakes this season, i can see Lewis DNFing at least once more and just missing it.

i can see McLaren taking the Constructors title with ease though at this rate.

Two years ago alonso was 50 points behind and clawed it back to nearly winning it in the last race. I expect more dnf's or grid penalties from both mclaren and ferrari as the engines and gearboxes get older. Alonso is the clear favourite hammy just doesn't have the level head to keep it in the points and the podium for the rest of the season. As for RBR unless they find the ugrades i don't see them challenging.

Don't think Ferrari or McLaren have any real engine concerns, and the DNF's at Spa saving them doing that race probably helps them even more on the engine side, gearboxes are not really a major worry either.

Just checked, and its never happened before. There have been two instances of a driver winning having only won 1 race that season though (Hawthorn in '58 and Rosberg in '82).

Yep that's why it would be the best :p

'82 didn't pretty much everyone win one race and no one got 2? Would be impressive for someone to get a title with his only win being the title :D

I would be impressed if he did it without a pole position too...

Ah, there have been 2 title winners who didn't have a pole position, Hulme in '67 and Lauda in '84.

Nobody won more than 2 races in 82.

I don't know what the highest number of winners in a single season is though. BRB, Google...

It was '82 again with 11 winners. We've only got 7 so far this year, we'd need both Lotus', Massa and Schumacher to win to even tie the record.

I have to say as much as I like Kimi it would be a travesty. Losing to his team mate in a qually battle, driving reasonably well consistently without really setting the world alight and winning a title?

It would be utterly laughable in comparison to some of the drives and qually efforts Lewis, Jenson, Vettel and Alonso have put in.

Don't get me wrong I'd be happy for him to go back to Mclaren and win a title or six but to be world champion without a pole or win would be making a mockery out of the sport for me. Kind of like Everton winning the league without winning a game ;)

They have done that already when it wasn't legal, so it's nothing new. Even now it's legal some of the Hamilton fans didn't like it this weekend. Surely with such high levels of morality they won't be happy having Lewis win another title using that method

:D

I'm not against doing it when the need arises and when it makes sense to do it... Ferrari are the only top team to have a 'patsy' driver though with Massa having to donate points to Alonso at every available opportunity. Every other driver on the grid has to earn about 30 extra points to compensate for what Alonso gets given to him over the course of a season.

I'm curious as to where exactly Massa has donated 30 points to Alonso this year or even half that. You are mistaken in thinking even if they hadn't moved aside massa that massa would have beaten him. Clearly that Alonso started 10th and was behind him tells you that?

All they did was make sure Alonso did as little damage as possible to the tyres making the switch as early as possible. If massa wanted to beat Alonso he should have gone faster or put more cars between them. You say it's ok when it makes sense, well Massa has less than half the points of button. Why exactly wouldn't that be a good time to do it.

Massa got made a patsy driver by Alonsos performance relative to his. Clearly not the only team though judging by Webbers upset when bits of his car were removed for vettel. :D

I can only think of 2 times when Massa has given Alonso points. Germany 2010 and last weekend. Every when else Alonso has just... been faster.
