I'm really hoping someone will have spiderlings to sell at the show.

NEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!! :p

That is great colouring; even better that it's not an agressive one; I might keep a look out for one of those :)

Just got th OK to keep a T in my bedroom :D :D :D . So I will be looking for as many care sheets as I can find before buying one.

Anybody know of any other good sources of information on the web please share.

Regards
Paul.

Quick question -

A couple of pages back LK had a spiderling in a small cotton bud container, do these need to be placed on a heatmat to keep the humidity or is this only a factor when they are relocated to a larger tank ?

Thanks

They need to be placed close to, but not on the heat mat. You don't want them to dry out too quickly. My babies are about 2cm away from the mat and it keeps them warm enough without them losing too much moisture.

Question for you :)

You know the little spiderlings (the ones about the size of a 5p), can they do any damage biting wise?

Surely their fangs would be to small and weak to penetrate human skin?

And what damage does their venom do if they do manage to pierce your skin?

Cheers, :)

I dunno about wether they can bite at that age, but i do know that no T has a sting of much more than a wasp, or a bee :)

What can I say?

This is without doubt THE most fascinating thread I have ever read on any forum anywhere on the web ( had to be done )

I myself am not a huge fan of spiders.

I like the bigger, hairy ones and hope to one day have one but doubt I could bring myself to handle it. I would happily observe for the rest of time though.

I have a friend who keeps spiders and snakes. I have no problem with snakes at all and have happily handled his anaconda and a 15ft burmese python.

I will run a mile if confronted by a house spider though

I came accross this thread today and after 4-5 hours reading reached this point.

I must thank all who took part up until now sharing some amazing pictures and insight into this wonderful hobby :D

needless to say I will be keping a keen eye on it from now.

If I remember correctly, even a tiny spiderling can pierce human flesh. Considering they can pierce the hard outer skin of a cricket they would certainly be able to pierce human skin!

I think I'm right on that!!

Hi all.

Firstly an answer to the spiderling bite question.

Kyzia is correct - spiderlings manage to pierce the tough chitin shell of a cricket, so human flesh is no problem. However, most spiderlings are more prone to running away than putting up a fight.
The consequences of any bite would be negligable (allergic reactions excepted). A tiny amount of venom (if any) would be injected.
The only tarantula bites that seem to have any form of remotely nasty effects are those from the Poecilotheria (Ornamentals), Haplopelma (Asian tarantulas), Pterinochilus (Baboons) and Selencosmia (Mostly Australian tarantulas).
General flu symptoms and a light fever, nausea and cold/hot flushes seem to be the norm. Don't touch and don't get bitten is my rule with feistier tarantulas. :)

Anyway, on to the main point of my post:

I'm up in Leicester for a few days staying at Kates - so while I'm here I thought I'd check out the local exotic pet store.

After a long chat and a good look at all the specimens on display (excellent range for a pet shop), well - it would have been rude not to buy something wouldn't it? ;)

So, here I am the proud owner of a plastic container of web and dirt

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the webs occupant? :D

from the previous talk about the greenbootle blue, i'd have thought you got one of those, but that leg doesn't look like a bottle sling to me :p

need a bigger clue ! :D at lease show us the rump, you can paint the rest of the sling away from the pic :D

Firstly a fantastic read.

Secondly Lopez or lostkat could you let me know where the exotic pet shop in leicester is, i would love to go down and have a look sometime.

Sure, the place is called Hawg 'n' Herp and it's on the main road (33 Blaby Road) in South Wigston. Easy as pie to find, but it always looks as if it's shut because of all the bars on the windows/door.

The prices are high compared to what you'd pay on the internet, but as far as shop prices go, they're certainly more competitive. The guy knows what he is talking about and if you tell him you're a n00b he'll give you all the advice you need. They have an excellent range of stock from docile beginner spiders to psycho spiders for the experienced keeper. The juveniles and adults are under the counter on shelves to your left as you walk in, and the slings are behind the counter in small clear tubs. If you ask him, he's more than willing to demonstrate and handle the T's for you.

On another note, none of you have even been close to identifying Leon's latest acquisition. Here's another teaser;

Can you tell what it is yet? :p
