*Sorted* Socket 939 A64 Dual core - all gone?

Think I may have missed the boat on this - I'm currently running a 3700+ and it's my birthday coming up - I had planned on getting a 4400+ dual core but it seems as though supplies have ran out.

First question would be will any more of these appear on the market? I'm guessing no. If this is the case what would the difference in performance be if I got the 4600+ OCUK have in stock at the minute? My 3700+ is currently clocked at 2.6Ghz which is the maximum my mobo will allow (Asrock Dual SATA - cant get the FSB above 250 whatever I do).

I guess I could get the clock speed a bit higher because of the higher multiplier, but would I lose out as it only has 512Kb L2 cache per core? My use of the PC is 50/50 between gaming and video encoding, I realise the dual-core wont help for gaming at the moment.

I was looking for the members market, I think when I first registered here you needed 100 posts to get it, now that's 200 is that right? So short of making 150 pointless posts I wont be looking on there before my birthday (17th Nov)

I do plan on moving to Core 2 Duo at some point but it wont be for at least a year (just had our second child and the free time I get doesn't justify any significant investment at the moment).

Any thoughts welcomed. I have also considered getting a new mobo that could put some more volts through my 3700+ to get it up close to 3Ghz if possible, but I feel that dual core would help more with the video encoding side of things.

Cheers!

There are still quite a few out there, you just have to look a bit. Be warned though, prices are going up as stock becomes rarer.

as you have OC'd your 3700 i am assuming you are competent at overclocking, so why not buy an opteron 165 and OC that, your pretty much guaranteed atleast to OC to 2.6ghz (assuming no other hardware holds you back) even with a poor stepping, other retailers are currently selling them online for £106 (well thats the cheapest i found) excluding PnP

It's the OCWorkbench version of the 1.4 BIOS I think.

Never mind that though, what about my birthday??

Also I know it has been asked before, but would 1Mb cache per core equate to better performance?

And if I were to get an opteron 165 I would need to be able to push the fsb up towards 300 to achieve the clocks I'm getting on the single core at the moment, which im sure isnt going to happen with this board. I wouldn't want to see a drop in performance with what I'm getting now (which does me fine in games) at the expense of having the extra core.

Keep the thoughts coming please! And at the risk of p***ing off the fine OCUK people, anyone feel like emailing me the location of an in-stock 4400+??

If you have a cpu with 1mb of L2 compared with one with 512kb of L2 then it is roughly worth an extra 200mhz. Just remember that while you can overclock the cpu in mhz you cannot add any extra cache.

Google is your friend.

Google hates me.

Actually found one somewhere, but at at least twice what I am willing (or able) to pay..

Off to play footy, will check back later

Well I would but the max 250 fsb I get would give me 2250Mhz tops, I can get my 3700+ up to 2.7Ghz easily enough, thats a fair drop.

You people that were finding these in stock, is that the places that are charging upwards of £300? A couple of weeks ago they were going for £160 ish - thats what i was looking to pay.

Nice find - thanks mate!

Is a bit steep though, my limit is really £160 -£170.

Incidentally I just noticed the email in my trust was 4 years old and I cant access it, so just in case anyone has been emailing me, could they try again :o

There are plently of places with X2 3800+ still in stock although I can't mention any of their names.

Why not just try using one of those online shopping search websites. (google has one but I won't say any more).

(if you find one just don't come on here and suggest where you got it from as thats not allowed either).

As for which processor to choose a X2 3800+ is an excellent start and a very good 'upgrade*' from a 3700+.

*by upgrade I mean its dual core. In most current games you will notice no difference by going dual core.

Well thanks to all your help (esp pastymuncher) I now have a 4400+ on the way. The price was so good I am now thinking of upgrading the motherboard too!
