Socket 939 Upgrade Help!

Just so you know in advance, make sure you install the AMD Dual Core Optimizer before you attempt to run CoreTemp. Otherwise it will more than likely cause the system to instantly power off, which can be slightly disconcerting!
;)

Hey GeForce, I can't remember if it was you or STR that was talking about that priority 9 and blend test stuff, it did get me thinking so I gave it a whirl! :)

However it pretty much locks up all my previously *stable* machines lol! :D

One thing I forgot about A64 is the flippen memory controller is on the chip so even it passes a Small-FFTs test it doesn't mean its stable, once I started running my final blend tests I walked into a world of pain.

Pretty much a week of testing down the pan, fair enough I know what each chip can handle but I didn't take into account the *memory controller*, lol oh well back to the lab! :o

P.S: There is something a little buggy about Orthos, can't quite put my finger on it yet so I have changed to the new multi-core Prime95 v252

Hey wayne, u sure it was lock up or extremely sluggish response?, the thread priority does that since its giving all the cpu it can to the program other stuff at normal priority takes a loooong time, might even include mouse cursor :D

Couldn't tell to be honest, it happened twice, first time I could see the screen but my mouse wasn't moving and it didnt respond to keyboard, the second time it happened the monitor had gone into standby mode and wouldn't wake up with mouse wiggle?

You may be right its running again now, I've set the machine fully back to stock, loose memory timings etc just to see if I can get this thing to pass!

I just made this screenie now, I was able to use the PC although it was sluggish (as u would expect) but are you saying that at some points in the testing Orthos gets *really* stuck into some crunching and won't allow me to use it?

I'm looking at alternative testing programs, I don't like Orthos anymore! :D

[edit] or at least I don't like the Priority 9 thing, always used Priority 1 myself but forgot why until I tried 9.

How long should i be testing for stability for with orthos, and on what priority? Is 9 really necessary? Dont want to kill my PC lol....

i tested for a few hours last night at 2.8Ghz and stock volts and no errors were made....does that mean it is stable? priority was set to 1 and i did the blend test. I know some people like to test for days with regards to stability, should i be doing the same?

2.8 at stock is good.

If you use S&M it will stress both cores, which is what you want.

I have never done more that about 6 hours of stess testing.

CPU usage with orthos is 100%, been going about 45 mins so far on priority 9 and blend test without any hiccups...doesnt the 100% usage mean both cores are being used?

If i switch to S&M, what settings do i use?

Yes it does :) Orthos is fine and is fully stress testing both your cores, don't worry.

I think it was STR, but I was reading the thread so I know what you're on about :D Interesting results though, I'll have to play around with this at some point. Like you, I usually just stick to Priority 1, but I'll stick it on 9 later and see what happens

Good luck with getting them stable lol :D

Think the max overclock for this opty is 2.8Ghz on stock volts. Tried 2.9Ghz and was about to start orthos when i got a BSOD...gonna try fiddling around to try and get it to 2.9Ghz stable, but im putting my money 2.8Ghz being hte max. Still tho, a 800Mhz overclock is nothing to complain about!

So guys, how does a opty at 2.8Ghz compare to other processors, especially C2D? Just as a comparison, what would be the C2D equivalent of this opty at 2.8Ghz?

Nice overclock! Nothing at all to complain about there :)

You could try adding a little Vcore to get the clockspeed up - I'm pretty sure that chip will hit 3Ghz with a bit more voltage.

I think you might find that it hits a bit of a voltage wall after 2.8Ghz though, ie. the CPU needs a fair amount of additional voltage to get it stable.

That's not a problem as long as it stays at a reasonable temperature, so keep an eye on it ;)

you will be safe to go up to 1.4 - 1.45 vcore.

Mines been running at that vcore for well over a year, if not almost 2.

if you cant get it stable with that then 2.8 at stock would be great.
