Yes some of you may laugh and mock me, but for the time being I am going to have to stick with my Socket A.

Just wondering whether anyone has/knows how to find a reasoably priced Barton 3200+ as I know they are like golddust?

Thanks

You'll not find a cheap one, sold mine in march for £95  Even if people did know where to pick them up cheap they wouldn't be allowed to say as it would be a competitor - read FAQ's

cheapest option is to get a xp2500/2600 mobile chip and oc it to 3200 speeds (and above!) they run at 14x133 at 1.45 but do 11x200 (make sure you have multy and vcore adj in ** bios)at at 1.5vish. they will still cost you around £60 on ebay tho. if you want to oc then try to get the IQYHA stepping. also make sure its either a 1.45 or 1.35v chip and not a 1.65 desk top replacement

I was really looking for personal ones, not companies as they are going for a lot, i was looking for a kind hearted person!

Im currently using an athlon 2400+ but never had the balls to overclock!

Thanks

Yep, 2nd hand XP-M is the way to go, a good one would go higher than a 3200!:) You need about 250 posts (iirc) before you can access Members Market on here, so you might want to go for auction sites.
(To both the OP and EKsparky, I think there's some rule against discussing trades outside MM so I'd edit out those bits of your posts and take it to email;))

Some of the xp mobiles will have been oc'ed like hell, but they should still have a few years left in em ;)

Socket A was a great socket. And it's great how I can sell a socket a rig I've got for almost the exact same as I spent on it 3 years ago!

Play on the bay and you'll get one for £75 + del (i know cos thats what i sold one for a while back).

They dont do as much now, as people are importing them from the states for £75 +del, and they have lots of units available.

It's still a lot of money for a 3 generations behind current CPU - it goes to show how good they are.

I sold mine for an x2 3800, and didnt really see as big a change as i would have expected.

Ebay

Ive been looking on there for a while now, but people are expecting you to pay silly prices which is a shame, as I also cant find anywhere to import one from!

iv seen xp-m2600 cpus going on the members market for around 60 quid all in. not bad at all for a quick and easy upgrade. and best part is that all these mobile cpus easily hit the 2.2ghz xp3200 speed and since they are mobile cpus they manage it at a much lower voltage than the stock 1.65v so you get a cooler running cpu and lower power consumption too. then its up to you if you decide to clock it up higher.....

even better if you can run XP-M 2400 @ 250FSB with mem at 1:1 :-)

can't seem to let go of my XP-M 2400

Not too bad for a socket a!

Mobiles definatly the way to go if wanting an axp, better in every way.

If I come across one of these mobile xp-m 2400's does this fit in a standard socket a slot?

Would you recomend this over a 3200+ due to price?

I looked at the 3200+ to upgrade from my 2800+ and just can't work out why they are so expensive 2nd hand, I know they run at a higher FSB but for not much more you can get a 64 chip and board. which surly would out perform it.

You on a DFI? My NF7 can barely hit 220 and that's on a cool day after lots of pleading and promising to buy it ice cream if it complies...

Yep, they're all standard Socket A CPUs!

I would unhesitatingly reccomend it for for ANY reason! Nearly all of them can do 3200 speeds (200x12) straight out of the box, and at a much lower voltage than the 3200 as Cyber-Mav mentioned, making them ideal for a quiet SFF box or similar. Or alterantively, with decent air cooling and good RAM, you can crank the voltage a bit higher and reach 2.4 or 2.6GHz! :) It's really INEXPLICABLE why they're STILL cheaper than 3200s - you'd have thought people would've caught on by now! :p If staying on Socket A is what you want to do, this is unquestionably the best CPU you can get for it in spite of not being the most expensive.

I know they run at a higher FSB but for not much more you can get a 64 chip and board.
Not true anymore... I checked out a few ebay auctions (simply because when I heard they were going for £75 I was severely tempted to sell off mine and upgrade - I would've actually been making a profit from what I bought it for 2 years ago!:D), and they all went for between £35-55, which is not THAT excessive for someone who already has a good Socket A mobo and RAM. If you were to move to s939 you'd spend that much alone on a decent mobo, and if you were to go to AM2 (which would be the sensible move as it'd be more futureproof), then you'd need new DDR2 RAM as well. If you're on a 2200+ or so, an XP-M will be a very good upgrade for the money.

£75 would indeed have been insane, and I'm guessing people buying at that price aren't normal users who just need a CPU for their rig, but overclocking enthusiasts who are looking to overclock them to Prussia and back for the bragging rights and keep them sitting there to remind them of the good old days... essentially as a show-off rig.
