Socket-A - Barton 3200+

Thanks for all the advice. So was the best way of spending about 100 is to go the 939 root perhaps with a 3500 and a new 939 mobo?

Haha - yeah, bringing this back on topic I would say that socket 939 is the way to go. You can get a NEW 939 3700 on special on OCuk this week for a very cheap price - worth looking at.

Remember that your upgrade path is highly determined by your mobo - the ASRock DualSATA gives the best upgrade path.

I ahve a socket a 2500+ which i should really over clock. Its at 2Ghz atm. Also have a Sempron on Socket A which has only had power 2 it for 10mins as the motherboard wouldnt put out video for some reason. Never touched it since. and that was bought when sempron were 1st release. Clocked at 1.8Ghz.

Mite just looking into the board see if a BIOS update may fix the VGA issues.

As for XP-M great little chips, i have one running in my server and its a cracker.

Sorry to bring this beack up again, but I am interested in the 3700+ on OC this week, as thats a very good price (do you know when this offer ends by the way?)

What mobo would you recomend to go with it? For price but also expandability, which would handle my AGP 8x graphics card, 2 sata drives and 1gb ddr ram?

This altogether would prob be around 100-120 - is this the best way to go? Just looking at the other chips on the site would it be better going for a dual core 0 either intel/amd?

Thanks

Weekly offers are Thurs->Thurs (or before if stock runs out)

I dont think you can get them on OCUK (may be wrong), but get the ASRock Dual SATA...

Dual core is presently of no benefit to games playing, and is only useful if you multi-task with a lot of different applications.

Ok thanks, sorry about so many questions!

Why do you rate this board so much? Is there a variation in this board? I have seen one with -e and one without?

So i would see more benefit off a 3700+ instead of a dual core at the moment? What about a HT intel?

Thanks

I rate the board so highly because its the only one that has a cheap upgrade (to PCI-e GFx) path for you. Otherwise its no better or worse than a dozen others i could name.

Socket 939 is the best Bang for the Buck ATM, so for your budget it would seem to be the wise choice.

I dont do Intel, but its generally understood (at least on these forums) that until conroe came out, for general usage and gaming, Intel sucked anus in comparison to AMD. *opens can of worms*

[edit] Intel does have advantages - its just that i don't have experience of any of them. I use 3.0GHz Intels at work, and they dont come close to my AMD rig for anything - i find them to be slow [\edit]

Ok thanks.

I will let you know if i treat myself this week!

On another point, noise! Not sure whether it is best to start a new topic. But noise is a big factor for me as my PC is in my room, although I like it to be on a lot i dont like to hear it. Ive got nothing big in there, and it is mainly the CPU fan i can hear, as my case fan is very quiet.

I dont want to really go the water route as this concerns me, but for a quieter case I have been thinking about investing in a high value case that perhaps has thicker walls. But im not sure whether this is going to make such a difference. Any other ideas or advice on this. As i say my cpu fan (Gigabyte (GH-PDU21-MF) G-Power) is set to its lowest speed and temps are not really a concern as i dont overclock. i just dont want to really hear the thing.

Thanks

Cases and cooling for that one i think mate.

Cases wise i'd have a word with Yewen, as he has forgotten more about cases than i ever knew...

Important things are Airflow and Noise Reduction - it's hard to get both in the same case. Cases that do it well are expensive.

A generally decent case that does well and isnt too expensive (and comes with a decent PSU) is the Antec Sonata. I've had two of these and was impressed with the build quality. You can get acoustipac dampening kits for these for about £35 as well. Might be an option.
