Sofas...are dfs any good?

One of the reason for a leather one is due to having a dog.

A dog that sheds hair on a cloth based sofa is going to be pain in the neck (take it from the poor sod thats had to get it out of the bed linen). Leather, won't be an issue in this department, plus its more comfy, looks better to.

I understand they aren't amazing reasons for getting a leather one but they are reasons none the less :p

And yeh your point is a very reasonable one. Way I see it though, if we buy a cheaper cloth one in a years time when we have more cash behind us we'll only end up buying a leather one anyway, spending more than we could have if we just got a leather one in the first place!
 
We've got a dfs leather sofa that we've had for going on 8 years, its sprung and looks brand new bar a couple of scratches. I have a couple of people I know through work that professionally repair leather, one of which fixed a couple of cat scratches on it. He commented that the leather quality was some of the best he had seen in a long time.

Not saying they don't sell cheap tat but they do also have some good stuff. We found pre and after care to be really good as well, I remember they even brought the showroom sofa round to see if it would go up the stairs (we were in a flat at the time).

Correct. Yeah I'm not THE home owner but it'll only be me and my sister living there so it'll be our place :) - so we have to fund it, furnish it blah blah blah.
 
Somebody I know has one - though it isn't a leather one - and the quality was terrible. That said, they did keep sending somebody out to fix it. Which I thought was both odd and quite good at the same time!

Aside from the fact he is renting, I did :confused: In fact, most people I know did. They ensured they had enough cash saved up before moving out. Simple.

Phate, depending on your thought process (buy cheap buy twice etc.) depending on how long you need it to last, yes, try DFS or Ikea (they actually have some reasonable sofas - but forget leather at this price range it's rubbish). Personally I went to John Lewis as I know form experience they will last a long time, but understand others may not need it to last so long.
 
I think people are being unfair on DFS, it's not cheap tat.

I bought a large leather L-Shaped sofa from them and it's been great. I looked at the the competition in the rival shops and DFS had the nicest feeling leather and finish.

Just as a comparison, my parents bought two leather suites and an armchair from some Italian leather place that designs them totally bespoke... I don't even want to think what the price was. However comfort wise, they really aren't any different to my DFS sofa, plus you've still got the worry that you could damage a sofa that costs a small fortune. Even then, DFS sofas aren't cheap.

I've got savings, but it's going on other stuff right now like a new shower, fridge/freezer etc.
 
Dfs do have some really thin leather stuff for sale though, its mainly the sale stuff though. When we got ours it wasn't cheap bit the leather is very thick full grain leather. That said though, we were looking at some chairs before Xmas and the stuff in john Lewis was pre student quality but very expensive, they sell a lot of top grain stuff because people like the uniform look and softness of it but its paper thin.

That says bought not rented?
If renting then of course it would be easier to have the cash to buy something, that's not what I got from the start of this thread though so took it that, as the OP said, its not rented.

I like a lot of the next home stuff lately, their chairs seem well made and comfortable (got an oversized single chair from there before xmas).
 
I have DFS 2 and 3 seater sofas. They're 6 years old now, and apart from one of the internal members breaking when I practically flew across the lounge and slammed onto it after about a month of ownership (was fixed by them within a few days), it's been spot on. No real wear to speak of (apart from that caused by the cats), and they still get plenty of abuse. No creaks, tears or zips falling off or anything. IIRC they cost £900 back then, which was money well spent as far as I'm concerned. You can spend £2K and up with a sofa that lasts 20+ years, but is it still going to be the sofa you want after 20+ years?

If mine last for another 5 years (which I have little doubt they will), I'll be happy.

However, that was 6 years ago so maybe their quality has slipped since?

I think his point is that you tend to talk with a lot of authority on a lot of subjects, despite in most cases not actually having any.

In this case, it would seem your whole "Cheap junk for desperate people - avoid" opinion is based on just one friends bad experience (though arguably it sounds like DFS have done right by them) - I wouldn't say that entitled you to make such bold, sweeping statements, would you? :)

As for the OP, almost all sofas you can get at DFS you can get for cheaper (new) on eBay. A friend got his huge goose down sofa from there and saved £1k+ on asking.

It was more the 'buy out right, don't finance' stance that was being taken. Which given the info in this thread I though the OP was buying a house, so would have been limited with cash. Somehow that is wrong tho and even though its not rented it is rented.. so more cash is available.
 
Why not look on ebay/gumtree and whatnot. Got a lovely sofa myself for peanuts which is actually very respectable and way better quality than sofa's which were not even in the same price band. Then again I am a ***** student.

Oh come off it, its a thread about sofas, I posted my opinion, I never claimed I was the worlds leading authority on the subject of financed sofas :p

I just think there must be a more cost effective way to buy a sofa on a budget than financing a luxury one from DFS, who sell finance packages with Sofas as a hook rather than Sofas.

As for the OP, almost all sofas you can get at DFS you can get for cheaper (new) on eBay. A friend got his huge goose down sofa from there and saved £1k+ on asking.
