Hey all,

Just before the WWDC I decided to go and sell my iMac G5 on ebay as I knew Steve Jobs was going to announce the Core 2 Duo iMac, and seeing as there were already Intel-iMacs out I couldn't risk it being "3rd Generations Behind".

Anyway, I managed to get £900 for it which was pretty incredible for a 12 month old machine, and decided to put it towards the purchase of a nice new shiny Mac Pro or Macbook Pro (pending what happened in WWDC).

Anyway... I saved up a good month's wages + my iMac money and decided to plump for a Mac Pro later that month after I'd watched the WWDC announcement and saw the spec for the Mac Pro.

However, As I was adding all the bits n' pieces in to my basket @ the Apple store I could see the cost going up and up and I began to second-guess myself. Did I really wanna spend ALL that money on a Mac and only use it for work/email/web browsing ? It seems like a lot of money to lay out in one go? (you can see where it was going ;))...I talked myself out of it

That's where the little voice inside my head steps in.. "why don't you visit OcUK and see what kick-ass machine you could get for the same price?"... Ok, so I thought. I visited the store, whacked all the top spec components in a cart and shockingly enough it came to the same total (give or take ~£50).

So now I was faced with a) Top-end gaming rig or b) Sexy Mac Pro. Baring in mind I had a tonne of unplayed games on my shelf I decided to go with the top spec gaming rig :( BIG MISTAKE!! Don't get me wrong, I love the machine (it's fast as hell) but every time I see a Mac on TV, or I come on here and look at the Mac threads I think to myself "DOH" and really really just want to sell the PC and go back to the Mac.

However, with the pending release of Leopard (Early Q2 2007?) and the Intel Roadmap being so hectic, there seems like little reason for me to go buying one now. I keep thinking to myself "would I be gutted months down the line when they update? Probably."

To get to the problem.. I can't stop thinking bout getting a Mac, I want a Mac ready for when I move (aesethically nicer) but I can't just go selling everything then come to the same crossroads all over again. I honestly think I've got withdrawal or something because I feel like I really messed up when I sold my last one.

Anyone else gone to "the darkside" then regretted it.. or am I just crazy?

Sorry for mega-post!

I went through the same. As soon as I saw the new 24" iMac I fell in love and knew I just had to have one. I sold my 1st generation G5 for £500 and also my Windows lappy giving me almost enough for a new one. I looked at the spec of PC I could get and it made me reconsider. However, later that day my Windows machine at work crashed and it made my mind up for the Mac.

Sell your new beast an get an Intel iMac, they are superb and they can run WInblos (if you feel you must) ;) :)

And me somewhat. I bought a mini about a month ago now. Two weeks after I bought it, I thought "Have I made the right decision here?" because I was missing the odd thing or two about Windows XP (mainly my games). :p

So I formatted the mini, ready to sell and put it back in its box. One week after using Windows XP again, I thought "Dear God, this is <bleep> compared to Mac OS X" and then tried Vista RC1. "Cripes, this is still <bleep>" says I and then unpacked the mini for the second time and promptly connected it all up again. There are more things that I miss about Mac OS X than Windows.

Now my PC is about to be dismantled and the money raised from the sale of its innards is to go towards a Mac Pro with the Radeon X1900 so I can game in Boot Camp and still use Mac OS X at all other times.

I simply can't do without Mac OS X now. It's just too good!

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that I didn't originally buy into Apple's philsophy of 'hardware that just works' because I like to tinker about building my own systems. That all changed last weekend when I had to build two new systems for my Dad and sister. Man, I had so much trouble getting everything installed/connected/working that I said to myself "Never again. I'm definitely getting that Mac Pro."

I went through similar trauma when faced with a Core Duo MBP or a top of the range Vaio Core 2 Duo. I went for the former and that's that. Now i've switched, i'm not going back.
I laugh at Windows friends who ask me to help fix their problems. "Sorry I don't know, don't use Windows". Suckers.

I had to make a similar choice when purchasing a new laptop. In my case the decision was made easier by the fact that the MacBook is the best looking, most feature-packed and best value for money laptop on the market (in my opinion, atleast!). But I have still fallen in love with OS X.

I now have a wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket, crying out to be spent on a new desktop system. I could spend it on a home-built Windows system and spend hours on end tinkering with the software, playing with drivers and forever missing all the features of OS X that make me weak at the knees for the sake of a few games (which are, at the end of the day, just a waste of time which could be spent doing more productive things)... or I could buy another mac.

After using OS X for a couple of weeks, my mind is made up. I'm hooked.

P.S. Browsing through the Windows & Other Software forum just makes me giggle now. All of those people battling for a trouble-free computing experience, waiting for Vista with baited breath... I'm out of the rat-run now. I've found computing nirvana :)

I feel for you EVH, I really do :( ... get a mac ASAP! :p

I remember around the time just before i switched, i was really worried actually because believe it or not i had never used a mac before and wasen't sure on the compatibility aspect of it ... i spent a stack of money on one without even trying OS X , i guess this was because for the last year or so i had researched and obsessed over every bit of mac & apple info I could get my hands on after purchasing my first iPod.

Lucikily as soon as my mac arrived it was everything i hoped for and more ... i'll never, ever go back to Windows as long as i have a choice in the matter. All hardware and software i buy now, whether its music, gadgets or computing things has to be Apple. I use a dell pc at work all day so i always get reminded of how superior and how much of an advantage OS X is.

If i were in your situation i'd probably have major doubts of going back to a mac, i've done the whole selling off a sell made pc before a few years ago and its a real hascel, but to be honest I would just go for it and get a mac, it doesn't have to be an expensive one ... just something that will run all your programs at an average speed and can let you settle down for a couple of years with knowing you won't have to bother getting a new system for a long time.

Mac wise I would probably recommend a Mac Mini, I have the top of the range model (1GB RAM, 100GB HDD, Intel 1.66GHz) and i know it isn't the fastest computer in the world or the best mac i can get but for the price and specs it is ideal for me, i do a lot of graphic stuff and even some video editing and it handles anything i throw at it with ease.

Good luck with the situation,

Steven.

Cheers dude.

I am in the position to sell off my current PC hardware, so that's not a problem.. the only problem is the value I will get back after I sell the pieces.

I estimate that if I sold everything on a modest "50% of what its currently worth new" policy I'd get £1500. That's good because I know i'd get roughly 70% of what the hardware is worth in reality but I'm not really looking to buy another iMac after I sell the PC and the Mac Pro would require a bit of saving (probably a month), so my main concern is selling the PC and being left in Limbo without a machine at all while I save for a nice Mac.

On the other hand, I could keep the PC and save until mid-November and sell then, but I risk a lower price for the hardware

Decisions decisions :o

Keep what you have, start saving up and wait for possibly the next MacBook - hopefully with the next Intel line of C2D, whatever that code name is with Leopard.

So you've only got less than 6months to wait... patience alway pays off :)

Hmm, yeah I see where your coming from.

Since your talking about mid-November I would actually just wait until Macworld '07 at the beginning of January ... it is definetly the most sensible thing to do all round as you'll be able to save in the mean time, have something worthwhile to look forward too over the festive season (this is one of the many reasons i like the Macworld's :p) and be at the best time to be buying a new mac.

Sure, you'll have to put up with Windows for a couple of months but you'll appreciate your mac so much more when you eventually get it.

In the meantime get yourself a copy of iWoz (Steve Wozniak's Biog) and iCon (Steve Jobs biog) which should keep you going till the new year ;)

I had the same decision to make, and in fact did exactly the same thing, building up a system in an OcUK basket to the same value as the Macpro.... I however managed to stick to my first thought and got a nice shiny Macpro. :) Im slightly annoyed i didnt take the oppertunity to get an x1900xt instead of the standard 7300gt... but that upgrade will come. Ive seen the reviews of the "modified" 8-core Macpro and im hoping that Apple will release such a beast early next year as im due to upgrade my 2nd PC rig then and will definately be getting a mac of some description.

if s-video out could be fixed on the macbook pro under xp then id buy one, theres just not enough support for xp functionality.

Yeah, I was thinking of just waiting until Macworld '07 because I'm thinking that even if they only revise the Mac Pro with something small (e.g. chip speed bump) I can use the 3 months extra saving time to possibly get the 30" Display too :)

The only problem is the more I use Windows the more I just want to go back to OS X. It seems like a Fan Boy statement to say it in such a blunt way but truthfully I miss the worry-free mindset (more than anything) that comes with OS X. For example, if you wanna try out different apps you can just drag n drop them in to Applications and you're done..you don't have to worry about uninstalling, defragmenting or screwing the registry up.

Also, it's beginning to get on my nerves that no matter how hard you try, trying to make a PC blend in to the surroundings in a new house (with minmalistic design in mind) is next to impossible. Even with a Shuttle SFF PC that I have now it's very blatant.. and I am someone who is fussy on these sorts of things; so the emphasis on getting the Mac Pro for design and style is somewhat exaggerated in this case. Perhaps to the point where I want people to notice it, but I don't want it to stick out like "OMG *** BIG SCREENZ PCZ LOLZ"

@ DreederOcUK: You got any pictures of the Mac Pro setup? Might help with the withdrawal lol

Yes, I suppose but that's £399 off my savings for the Mac Pro :p ;)

Kind of starting to regret buying the PC now..

I'm betting that when Adobe launch their Creative Suite 3 universal binaries, Steve will have something like an 8-core Mac Pro ready to launch with it. Sometime around June if he has the WWDC at the normal date instead of August.

Here is my Macpro setup

Huge picture sorry, only one i think ive got online, its as featured in next months MacFormat magazine....:P 4x 2.66ghz, 4gb ram, 1750gb HDD, 7300gt.... hmmm
The front of the case doesnt really look like that, the flash lit up the fans etc under the front vents, that are normally hidden.

Im upgrading to an Apple 30" Cinema display before Christmas, cannot wait. :D

I feel the same, I sold my old G4 mac mini a little while back and I just miss using it, everything felt so good on it compared to XP.
Thing is I need my games too and I couldn't justify having two machines really. It's just a shame the Mac Pro is so expensive, I realise you get a decent amount for your money, but I just don't need it. I single core 2 duo would be more than enough for me, 2 core 2 xeons is massive overkill. If only I could find a Mac Pro bare motherboard I'd be able to build myself a machine.
