Anyone got this card care to comment if this is normal? I bought it second hand a few months back, it was super cheap, guy showed me it working before I bought it, I've been using it since, a little OC'ing here and there but I've left it at stock as the boost clock reached up to 2,000mhz on the core and never really dips below 1,700mhz on a custom (50%) fan profile which is plenty enough for me.

The issue lies in heat, without setting a custom fan profile, when gaming even in a well ventilated case, the fans creep up to > 85% with temps sitting around 80C. So it's mega loud.

If I use a custom fan profile, it's perfect but obviously it drops it's boost clock down to around.

I've ordered new thermal pads and paste and will be reapplying when they arrive, if this doesn't solve the issue, is it RMA time? Or is this normal? All reviews I'm seeing place this card in the mid 60's under seriously heavy loads over a long time.

That does seem hot under a custom fan profile. My Aorus 1080ti will hit 85 tho on the auto fan profile but sits around at 65 at 60% on custom. Hopefully the new paste will sort it, I would use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut as it isn't conductive so is perfect for GPU's as you have to ensure you cover the whole die so not scrimp when applying.

I got the following:

Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (1 gram, been a while since I reapplied GPU thermal paste so hopefully it's enough)
And 2 large arctic thermal pads, 0.5mm and 1.0mm

I'm also delidding my CPU and ordered liquid metal as well

Fingers crossed this fixes the issue. I'll run hitman for a few mins and show you standard no custom profile...

So the below is with default fan profile after only a couple of minutes sat idle in a mission in Hitman 2 (note, this is any game, just using Hitman 2 for an example as it's a GPU intensive game)

Idle is around 50C always needing around 10% fan speed on default

This is my custom fan profile:

Granted, I'm still tinkering around with the fan profile as 60% is too loud imo but I can't go any lower because the equilibrium seems to sit around 85C at 55%.

Finally, here is going back to default profile after running custom, here you can now see the fans struggling to get the temps back down to stop thermal throttline (pink bars on perfcap reason).

Just to make the point, this is in a Fractual Meshify C TG case, 2 fans blowing at a comfortable rate onto the GPU, with just as good ventilation. It's hardly cluttered in any sense. I had the same issue in a Mid tower Lian Li which is actually why I got this case today and realised the issue isn't airflow.

Those temps are really high considering how high the fans are. If it works changing the paste then order some more as 1g doesn't go far.

1g is purely for the GPU, think I should grab some more? Last time I applied thermal paste to a GPU was back on 2 8800GTX's when I was putting DD waterblocks on them lol

Oh ok yeah that's fine, I assumed you would be putting it on your CPU as well, I got 3 applications on my 8700k from 1 gram.

I got left over paste for CPU, excited to see the drop after delidding it. I've been on a binge the last 2 days trying to get temps down. But it all seems to be pointing to my GPU being horribly inefficient. Found this earlier, stock thermal paste application on a FTW3 1080 ti (identical to my card, but with 3 fans not 2).

Thermal Grizzly will improve temp for sure and higher fan curve in the middle as well ;)
35%-40c
50%-60c / 60%-60c
etc.

holy **** that's crazy nearly half the die doesn't have paste on

It's either something like that, or the past owner wasn't fully honest and he has indeed opened the card up and just done a very bad job. All will be revealed on Tuesday when all the boys arrive.

I'll give it a shot. But I've tried higher profiles and it still ends the same. In order to stop thermal throttling it needs to be 70% minimum fan speed.

Does your case have decent ventilation?

Very, I just upgraded from a older version of the lian li pc-a55. It was very cramped. But I just setup in a new case today in a fractal meshify c tg. I'm still using the micro atx board I had but I've for a new Asus Z390-E gaming on the way to make use of the space. I've got 2 120's on the front and a single 120 at the rear. Top vent open with just the dust filter on for ventilation. I have a bunch of 140's coming on Tuesday as well as a kraken x62 rev 2 to replace my air cooler (90mm noctua cooler).

I'll grab a snap shortly.

Ignore the bad pic, it's 2210 here. Below the GPU is a tiny 1x PCI wireless card, about 1" long (soon to be gone), then a Asus Xonar STX ii. In front, are 2 120mm Noctuas, and a single 120mm Noctua at the rear. Nothing up top yet which is where the Kraken X62 V2 will go replacing the CPU cooler. Which, the 80mm fan on the back side of it was added today after removing from my old case as after testing, it actually helped lower the temps a little despite being smaller than the initial fan. Also, ignore cabling, it's all coming out in a couple of days again.

But as you can see, plenty of breathing room and fresh air hitting the card. Even with the window off. It's still reaching the above thermal throttling unless fans go nuts.

If you have the cash, then get a Alphacool Eiswolf 120 GPX Pro.

I have one on my titan X and it's 20c idle and never goes above 60c in testing.

In all honesty, the Kraken X62 is more for my wife than me, I want to test it out for a bit as I'm curious what the AIO road is capable of these days. I got this case today simply to test if it was air flow. Money isn't much of an issue when it comes to PC parts, so if I STILL have issues with heat after replacing the thermal paste, I'll go down the RMA route. If it does fix the issue. I'll be keeping my setup until I get the next gen (skipping 2080 ti for now) and I'll go back into WC'ing. Been tempted for a while now (numerous threads) but ultimately can't decide on a case!

The alphacool is not really a AIO.

I have a Alphacool Eisbaer 280 CPU(you can top up the water) connected to the Eiswolf.
It's a simple twist and connect system. So I have to 2 pumps and 2 rads connected together :D

If I were going down that route, I'd just stick to a custom loop haha, but cheers for the heads up mate. Might be something the wife will be interested in to get her into the water cooling side of things.
