It turns out that their systems will only accept US based cards, despite the fact that their website FAQ specifically says they ship worldwide.

Keep an eye out on HUKD, Amex tend to have quite a few offers, the one I've got had an offer of spend £2k in the first three months and get x amount of Avios which we did and got loads of little visits on holiday for free. I just paid it off instantly.

If you have a UK Amazon account you can buy items from Amazon.com if the seller lists they ship to the UK.

Isn't there a site, can't remember the name, that allows you to create virtual cards? You can set up maximum spend, one time only cards, looking I think there are a few companies that do this, do a search for "virtual credit card".
