hi,

It’s been a while, I used to game a LOT but in recent years I haven’t. I have the bug again and as always it started off being a simple upgrade.

I have an I7 2600k and thought I’d just buy a new GPU maybe a 1060 and be done with it. Then realised my CPU would be a bottleneck so started looking at a new chip. I’ve always been an intel fan but the prices have really escalated. So that’s my first dilemma.

Also I have an HP 2475 ips monitor which I love, however I’ve now realised that a new 4K monitor is also needed.

So..... who has done a similar upgrade? What have you got to tell me? Do you see my confusion? Things have changed so much!

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

What's your total budget for an upgrade?
Do you really need a 4k monitor? You'll need some decent GPUs grunt to power it at decent settings which will certainly eat into a budget.
1440p is a good gaming resolution, but you could always stick with your current monitor & upgrade at a later date when funds permit.

4k monitor along with a full PC upgrade, you will have to compromise somewhere.
Gpu alone to adequately power a 4k monitor, will eat 1/2 the budget.
Sure you can drop various settings in game to help with frame rate but then what's the point of having 4k?

Rizen cpu/motherboard will save a few quid compared to an Intel setup second hand parts will also save cash.

Robzere31 is right, a nice 4K monitor around the 27-28" range is going to cost you £350, a GPU like a Vega 56 is going to cost you at least another £350, that's £700 of your budget gone on just those parts, you may be able to get a Vega 64 2nd hand for £400 which is what I paid for mine a few weeks ago and runs 4k fine, but the nVidia alternative like a 1080 upwards are more expensive, so if you did decide to go that route, the £300 you have left isn't going to buy you much at all.

You then need at least CPU, Motherboard, RAM, and a decent PSU to drive the GPU, you may be able to recycle parts from your old PC like the hard drives and chassis.

You think that a 1060 wouldn’t run at 4K without some stuff turned off?

I think I need to study some more, all I wanted to do was buy a GFX card hahaha
1060 is mainstream level card and would struggle heavily in 4K.
Unless you like watching slide shows...
High details/settings are very demanding even for high end GPUs.

And Sandy Bridge era PC is anyway such old that except for at the time top quality PSU, also that would need replacement before putting in new more expensive parts.
Some unknown quality PSU has its "uncertainties", even without it being old used PSU.
Though fortunately nowadays you can get very good PSUs very affordably.
Something we can't unfortunately say about GPUs and memory.

Though thanks to AMD you can get notably more powerfull CPU for reasonable price.
Unlike "We make you buy new motherboards for fun" Intel, AMD even offers reasonable upgrade path for their current platform.

In which case you might as well run 1080p or 1440p (preferred)

I genuinely think 4k for PC gaming is overrated, the power required for it compared to 1440p or ultrawide (which I run) is huge.

It took me 4 years to move from a 1080p monitor to an ultrawide monitor, building my PC in stages & upgrading when funds allowed.
Even now, although funds allow I wouldn't go 4k as I just don't think it's worth it.

IMO the 2600k will be fine for a while, especially with a decent overclock. Anything up to GTX 1070/1080 would be matched just fine.

Spend all the money on GPU and monitor! (After making sure you have enough memory and a decent SSD)

Thanks for all your replies and advice, Got a 1060 and a couple of SSD’s in RAID and overclocked the CPU to 4ghz and the RAM up too.

It’s pretty fast and now I’ve ironed our the bugs I’m beginning the journey again.

Thanks again.
