Hey thanks for looking, just looking for some advice with ip addresses as networks etc is not my strongest subject.

well just wanting to know is there any real need/benefit of assiging a static ip address instaead of one that i obtain automatically.?

and yesterday i tryed to make my system a static ip address but then coudnt access the internet, i used the command prompt and typed ipconfig /all
to find my ipaddress, subnet mask and default gateway, and entered these numbers into the tcp/ip properties to use as a static address with no luck

how could i go about this.?

thanks

Kenny

Main benefits are if you use any port forwarding rules in your router or connect to your PC from other devices over the LAN, in which case having an IP address that doesn't change might be desirable.

Personally I use a static IP address on my main PC, but I don't set the IP address manually in the TCP/IP properties for my network interface. Instead I add a static mapping in my router's DHCP options so it always dishes out the same IP address to my PC.

with the home hub

advanced, continue to advanced, logon, devices, edit the device, check the "always use same address" box, apply (its under configuration, devices, if going to advanced doesnt auto take you there or your version doesnt have things hidden in that manner)

(based on the V1 box i think it is, dont know how much of the interface has changed over the revisions)

right im lost, where do i find advanced.? my network places.?

sorry about this

type the IP of your home hub into a browser, if you have vista go to network and double click on it, default on mine is 192.168.1.254

default user name is admin

default password is either admin or the serial number of your homehub (the bit under the barcode that starts S/N: ....)

i dont believe you need the S/N: bit or the (44) bit at the end, experiment hehe

http://www.frequencycast.co.uk/homehub.html this covers a fair amount of bits and pieces on the home hub

looks like homehub v2 does things a bit differently but theres a guide on there for that aswell
