A friend of mine wants a discovery budget around 2.5k as it has seven seats and she likes them.
She wants a TDI but I have advised her to get a petrol with LPG conversion.
Would it be fair to say that she will get a later one for her money and the running costs will be roughly the same.
Also she said well what if the V8 goes wrong surely it would be more expensive than the TDI to fix, I would have thought with the V8 being quite a simple engine to work on it would not be a worry.
Is there anything else she should know am I right or wrong to recommend the petrol.
As for other recomendations no point as she really wants a Discovery as she lives in a rurel area and likes the space for the childen.

Am I right in thinking that a £2.5k Discovery is going to be a money pit unless you can do a lot of the work yourself? I hate to stereotype but surely as a girl she just wants her car to.... work?

Which a Disco wont do.

Main thing is avoiding anything with rot, engine and boxes are pretty solid...theres a lot of balljoints and uj's on them but fingers crossed!.
:)

In my experience when a woman decides they want a certain car, hell will have to freeze over before they are swayed regardless of suggestion.

I suspect that what she actually wants is a posh 4x4, preferably a Range Rover, and she has seen that they cost a fair amount of money, but you can get an old Disco for what she has to spend which is "sort of the same".

Women :p

This is what i mean though.

Her thought process will have been;

-I live in a rural area and have kids
-I want a big 4x4 like the ones i have seen at school
-oh its a range rover, i want a range rover
-asks someone/checks on AT
-oh, damn, i only have 2500 to spend, range rovers are a lot more than i have
-*click down tab*
-oh look land rover make these other ones which are basically the same i want one of those, right yes i am getting one of those

And now she wont be swayed, even if a brand new Landcruiser was completely free she wouldnt have it :p

Love your view of women mate.

My sister has a Landy and lives in a rural area, and she also has kids. It just so happens that when the weather gets bad, the Landy is the only thing that stands a hope in hell of getting off the drive, and her daily driver becomes an ornament...maybe not all woman are as dumb as your making out...
:)

Applies equally to men too who dont know about cars too! Men are just a bit easier to sway than women are, it sounds like the person referred to in the OP has her heart set on a certain vehicle to me....

When they get an idea best to just smile and wave i find.

Or go along with it providing as much damage limitation as you can if they are family/partner etc :p

That dont work, its like going shopping for floor tiles, i just end up exhausted with a parking ticket and the hump.

Give them the money wave and smile, its the only way :)

I am actually going through this atm, if i gave the money and waved we'd end up with something seriously overpriced on our drive riddled with faults i'd imagine. And sourced from a shady dealer with a 6 month "warranty" :p I HAVE to be involved even if it just to limit the damage!

Your still young, wait till you have 20 years of that see if you still want to go shopping with the wife :)

200TDi is a very capable & reliable engine so steer her away from the V8 as it's a pile of ****.
She needs to get one that hasn't been worked to hard as well so check underneath for off road evidence/damage & check for rust Everywhere.
Apart from that i can't say much more as i know them to be crap in just about every situation apart from off road & that's only after mods.
No point me trying to change a womans mind even if she is buying the wrong motor for herself, She'll learn in time.

It never ceases to amaze me how people buy/choose motors for themselves.

(This post is blatantly bias against Discos as I've pawned them off road in a 300 quid SJ & on top of that everybody i know who has owned or dealt them has had a nightmare, I wouldn't even recommend one to an enemy.)
